I've been catching up on the Savage Dragon through the Archive books (great buys!) and now I'm caught up with the monthly.For over 25 years Erik Larsen has been putting out of the most eclectic and unpredictable books out there. The Savage Dragon followed its lead character through wars, deaths, marriages and alternate universes before handing off the book to his son Malcom Dragon, now a grown man himself with a wife and 3 kids.It's a fantastic book and worth following, it made me break my rule of not buying monthlies!

I ordered this book 4 years ago and lost it and am going to reorder it and volume 2 also because they were both great reads. The regular Savage Dragon series was always sold out at the comic shop I frequented back in the mid and late 90's but my Goddess Amazon.com hooked me up. Erik Larsen and I are now Facebook friends and I just recently stopped bugging him about the release of Volume 3.It's all in here. His first meeting with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the death of his first girlfriend which would become a major part of the storyline for months to come and just about all the major buttkicking and trash talking you would expect from this series. It's great that it's presented in black and white because I've found it helps me break down the art stages from penciling to inking.If you are a Savage Dragon fan, you will like this series.

Savage Dragon Archives is one of the best ways to enjoy an awesome comic series with twists, turns and history. These archive books remind me of the Cerebus phonebooks as they are in black and white but contain HUGE amounts of wonderful art by Mr. Erik Larsen. Volume one contains the mini series and the first issues of this epic series. I have just finished rereading them and have fallen in love with the series all over again. Definitely a steal at this price and currently the 9 volumes lead you only months off of the latest issues (available in comic shops). This series has some serious action, blood and sexual situations so not for the young audience.

I root for Erik Larsen, so I'm damned glad that SAVAGE DRAGON has lasted this long. I didn't think it would, not because it isn't a good comic book, but because I assumed it would've fallen prey by now to Image's long-publicized inconsistencies. But it seems that Image has, over recent years, recouped some of its fallen rep and glory. I've only again started checking out Image's newer stuff, having heard some good things on the grapevine. Currently I'm digging Invincible: The Ultimate Collection, Vol. 1,The Walking Dead Book 1 (Walking Dead),Noble Causes Volume 1: In Sickness And In Health (Noble Causes),Dynamo 5 Volume 1: Post-Nuclear Family (Dynamo 5), and Brit Volume 1: Old Soldier. So the future looks very promising. And some of the old school is still representing. SPAWN keeps on keeping on, although McFarlane has relinquished storytelling and artistic duties. In fact, of the seven artist/creators who founded Image Comics, only Erik Larsen has steadfastly stuck with simultaneously writing and drawing his comic book SAVAGE DRAGON. Since 1993, in fact. And, if one counts the mini-series preceding the monthly series, then it's since 1992. That's an impressive run.I root for Erik Larsen not only because he does have ability but because, back then, he wasn't considered one of the "superstar" Image founders. That label fell on McFarlane, Liefeld, and Jim Lee, with Larsen, Valentino, Portacio, and Silvestri considered to be the backup talent. To me, though, Larsen, like his creation Dragon, is a down-to-earth, blue-collared guy who worked really hard and made good. He more or less kept SAVAGE DRAGON going on schedule (although, yes, there were occasional lapses). So I give him props. Larsen deserves to make duckets off this archives series. And, at their reasonable prices, I was definitely gonna get in on this. SAVAGE DRAGON ARCHIVES VOLUME 1 takes you back to the beginning and showcases the energy and enthusiasm which are the hallmark of his titles. In black and white, this tome of intimidating bulk (which seems thick enough to stop a bullet) collects the 3-issue mini-series and issues #1-21 of the regular monthly title.As the story opens, Chicago is simply being overrun by superpowered menaces, dubbed "super freaks," against whom the all too human Chicago police force is powerless. The most powerful criminal entity is the Vicious Circle, led by the enigmatic, ruthless Overlord and their influence and power are rapidly spreading. Into this scene enters Dragon, an amnesiac freak found naked in a burning field. Dragon is of normal height but is massively constructed. He's green, and two-toed. And he's got a fin which elevates his height to 6'6" (if I remember my stats correctly). Time will show that Dragon is incredibly strong and resilient, gifted with amazing regenerative powers. Circumstances lead to Dragon joining Chicago P.D. and becoming the leading stopgap against the law-breaking "freaks." This archive covers the entire OverLord saga as Dragon grimly attempts to take down the Vicious Circle ringleader. It won't be easy.Plenty of surprises here as Larsen brings to these pages a cavalcade of characters he had imagined long ago from a fertile childhood. Some of these would be popular enough to merit their own titles (SUPERPATRIOT, FREAK FORCE). I also liked Mighty Man, whose alter ego startled me. Naturally, there are villains other than the Vicious Circle. We get to see Dragon face off against lobster mutants and disgusting sewer monstrosities. But the most insiduous nasty might be the demonic Fiend, who's fueled by hatred and can possess his victims. Guest stars occasionally pop in. In one out-of-town mission Dragon encounters New York's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Later he runs into the WildC.A.T.s. Larsen doesn't neglect the Dragon's personal life as we see various hotties fall for him. Alas, we don't find out his origin in these issues. That'll come much later. But we do get an idea of just how formidable Dragon is and how tenacious his recuperative ability. Larsen really puts his guy thru his paces.Here's my shot at being objective. For me, as a read, SAVAGE DRAGON ARCHIVES VOLUME 1 is worth around 3 stars. I'll add a half star for the very do-able price. Why 3 stars? A big part of why is the storytelling. The cartoony art I can live with, and, over time, Larsen even improves his renderings. But cool splash pages and buff, heroic poses can only carry the narrative so far. I haven't been religiously following SAVAGE DRAGON in recent years, so I can't comment on Larsen's writing skills as they are today. But his writing in these early issues is suspect, the plotting amateurish, the flow of the narrative spotty. What undermines this lengthy story arc even more is the decision to not insert copies of the original comic book covers (or anything to serve as a break). As it is, these issues just run into each other. This doesn't give the reader enough breathing room or a chance to assimilate the stuff he'd just read. The pace is relentless, and, at 500 pages of nonstop action, it's wearying. Brawl after brawl after senseless brawl, and, pretty soon, they melt into each other and lose all meaning. Of course, the very young comic book junkie probably won't mind too much. When I was a kid, nothing but nothing beat a wicked splash page.What do I like best about Dragon? I like that he's the toughest hombre in the Windy City. I like that he looks cool and so formidable. And I like that he's the working man's superhero. He doesn't grandstand or indulge in superheroic excesses. He does what needs to be done, then he's out. Yes, he's prone to surliness and he can be brutally no-nonsense, but when you're up the smelly creek without a paddle, he's the one you want bailing you out. I root for the Dragon, just as I root for Erik Larsen. So despite my negativity about Volume 1 of the Savage Dragon Archives, I still recommend it. So three and a half stars for Volume 1. And I just ordered Volume 2.By the way, how much do you think it costs Chicago P.D. to keep Dragon's uniforms in stock? Geez, the way he goes thru 'em...

Excellent read.Whats more to say, if you have ever been a fan of Savage Dragon or just looking to pick it up from the begging.Book is well bounded and the print quality is very high quality. The book is in B&W just like the original comic.I did find a few spelling errors that could of been corrected. Younglood for example should of been Youngblood

I would prefer if the Archive volumes were in color, but I'm mostly interested in the story so it is forgivable. The Archive volumes are a good value for the amount of story you get. Mr. Lawson is an excellent artist and storyteller and Savage Dragon is my favorite series. 5 stars for the series, but reduced to 4 for lack of color because it does take something away from the visuals.

I read Savage Dragon years and years ago. This is a fantastic reintroduction to the series and really highlights Larsen's art. Fast paced and fun book at a very reasonable price.

Wish it was color but I guess it would make a hell of a coloring book.

I admit I never bought the Savage Dragon, but as a kid I read my friend's entire collection and loved it. Now in my late 20s, I wanted to reread the series but was afraid hindsight was going to destroy all my fond memories of the book. It did not. On the contrary, I was surprised how well it all holds up. Yes, it's very early Image in that there's plenty of splash pages and mindless fight, but they're always fun and they work. The story moves and break-neck speed with lots of subplots moving in and out of the main Overlord story. The art is fantastic in B&W. Overall, it was an excellent buy!Note: This book made me wish Image was collecting all of Freak Force.(Hint hint, Mr. Larsen!)

I thought this book provided valuable information about KKR and the buyout industry. It also provides good definitions of some of the technical terms. Towards the end of the book, specifically the last chapter, there is too much cheerleading.

KKR is a truly unique institution. Are they merchant bankers, acting as fiduciaries in behalf of their clients? Or is it accurate to derisively call KKR takeover specialists, rapacious and always on the lookout for corporate prey? It is indeed difficult to pin a generic label on what KKR is doing--it depends on which side of the political fence you are in--but what we do know is that KKR is the acknowledged leader of the leveraged buyout, a branch of private equity investing which allows investors to profit from sizeable anomalies between a company's potential value and its current value, in part through the introduction of substantial levels of debt in a company's capital structure. As Baker and Smith explains: "By employing high levels of debt...they minimized the cost of buying the equity, which they shared with the target companies' managers. Assuming that the cash flows of the acquired businesses would be more than sufficient to repay the borrowing, [KKR's] success depended on a combination of timely debt reduction and the promotion of longer-term efficiency.""The New Financial Capitalists" is by far one of the best books dealing with KKR and LBO finance in general. As a 12er Shia Muslim, I believe that Gautama Buddha was a Prophet of God. What I like about Thay's approach is that he allows Theists to participate in his practice centers. He is known for helping people whether or not they are Buddhists. He was criticized by Communists and non-Communists for helping anyone in need during the Vietnam War. That is only one example of what I would call his "charity work". Of all the books by Buddhist authors on my shelf, this book and a few other books by Thich Nhat Hanh are my favorites.I began doing sitting and walking meditation using this book. Later, I purchased his commentaries on various sutras, as well as The Heart of Truth. The most recent book I read by Thay was Old Path, White Clouds: Walking in the Footsteps of the Buddha, which is actually the first book I would recommend one read by Thich Nhat Hanh. This book is a biography of Gautama Buddha that seems to be written for one who will be practicing Thich Nhat Hanh's flavor of Rinzai Zen Buddhism. After reading Old Paths, White Clouds, I believe a practitioner with no practice center nearby would have a bit easier time using Chanting from the Heart than if he or she started practicing only having the knowledge in this book.Of course, as a 12er Shia Muslim, I make Salat prayer, seek refuge in Allah, and read Quranic Sutras and follow the halal food laws. For those Buddhists who not only Five Mindfulness Trainings (5 Precepts) but are also Vegetarian or Vegan or just eat raw foods, those are excellent diets. Meat is allowed for Muslims, but Muslims are not obligated to eat meat. Thus, it is possible for a Muslim to practice the Five Mindfulness Trainings and even follow a meatless diet. In fact, the 1st of our 12 Imams, Ali Ibn Talib, who is the 4th Caliph of Sunni Muslims, wrote that one should not eat much meat. He also wrote that all people are either one's brother or sister in Islam, or one's equal in Adam, so a true Muslim ought to treat non-Muslims charitably and justly. That may seem like too much information, but I wrote the above for those Buddhists who may have had bad experiences with professing Muslims. Plenty of Sunni and Shia Muslims, including Sufis, love the Buddha and Buddhists. I am especially appreciative of Thich Nhat Hanh, as well as Theravada monk Bhikkhu Buddhi, who has produced a good large compilation of suttas and excerpts of suttas from the Pali Canon, as well as a good short book on the Eightfold Noble Path.Be happy practicing with Chanting From the Heart!

This book is a complete guide for daily personal practice and/or group practice. It is the only book I've found that offers an outline for everyday practice as well as an explanation and outline for ceremonies, which may be conducted throughout the year. Everything is explained in simple, easy-to-understand English, which is so typical of Thich Nhat Hahn's style.The book begins with a brief explanation of basic exercises. Next is a section on daily practice, which includes an outline of exactly what to do on a daily basis, and choices of recitations so you can change your routine periodically. Then the book has a section on ceremonies which is almost two-hundred pages in length. Instructions include ceremonies on the basics - refuge and mindfulness, the Buddha's birthday, New Year's ceremony, aspiration and praise ceremony, and a complete section on death, cremation and burial ceremonies. (A blessing ceremony and wedding ceremony are also included.) A section of discourses is next, and last is a section of music. It is a beefy book - 431 pages to be exact, and a nice ribbon marker is included in the binding.Even though Thich Nhat Hanh is a Zen Master, I have easily incorporated many of these practices into my daily Tibetan Buddhist routine.This is a great resource for the beginner or well-seasoned practitioner. Thank you Master for filling a void which has existed until now in western practice. I bow to you in great reverence for bringing easy-to-practice and understand Buddhism to the west. Thank you!

This book is full of great information and easy to follow. If you follow Thay online from Plum Village's Online Monastery on Vimeo you'll love this and I use it to add to my daily practice. My 12 year old also uses the mantras and prayers from this book. It gives several variations on breathing, meditation, etc. I'm grateful for the amount of information being available in one book.

This book is really great and extremely helpful. In contrast to other books I have purchased on mountain biking trails, this book was much more "user friendly" - it has perforated pages, so you can tear out the maps of the trails. The maps are packed with valuable information, such as descriptions of the terrain, difficulty rating, mileage, points of interest, etc. I have discovered many great new mountain biking areas thanks to this book. Very highly recommended.

I have mountain biked all over the US and have used a number of ride guides to show me the way. While this book is acceptable, in that it does list the trails, I find it very difficult to use. My biggest gripes are about the ride organization, the directions to the rides, and the lack of detail in the illustrations/maps. I would advise the author to pick up John Zilly's "Kissing the Trail" to see how a ride book should be done.The rides are not well organized. Most books group rides by locality or by difficulty (or both!), but this one does it alphabetically--not useful to those new to the area. Along those lines, the author makes the initial effort to number rides in the table of contents to correspond with the overview map of New Jersey but fails to carry it through in the rest of the book. The result? The poor reader cannot easily flip amongst the rides and figure out where they are on the NJ map. Instead, he has to cross-reference all the rides to locate them.Directions to the rides are rather poor. As has been pointed out in a review of the previous edition, the author assumes you know a lot about NJ. I have to use Google or Mapquest to really figure out how to get there.The maps and illustrations leave something to be desired. I feel the clarity that the author attempts to offer sacrifices the detail needed to help both locate the ride and to keep from getting lost. Also, while the perforated maps are a nifty idea in concept, the reality is they don't hold up well to the sweat and mud of mountain biking. Your best bet is to leave the original behind and take a copy with you.
