Dances that Describe Themselves: The Improvised Choreography of Richard Bull, by Susan Leigh Foster

From Library Journal

For some 30 years, Bull, described by Adriane Ruggerio in the International Dictionary of Modern Dance as "a dancer and stager of improvisational movement pieces," was part of the modern dance scene that thrived in the lofts and galleries of lower Manhattan. Trained as a jazz pianist, Bull explored the use of improvisation in dance and in his works made the creative process more transparent, allowing both the dancers and the audience to be surprised by "what comes next." Foster (dance, Univ. of California, Riverside) once worked with Bull and his wife, Cynthia Novack, and thus brings considerable insight to this study of the processes and procedures of the singular artist's creations. In addition to analyzing Bull's work, she also discusses the work of several of his contemporaries (e.g., Trisha Brown, Bill T. Jones, and Ishmael Houston-Jones). The title refers to a work by Bull in which the dancers recite as they perform; his dances, although improvised, proceeded from written instructions to the dancers, which detailed how each piece was to unfold. A chronological listing of his works and some selections from his writings are included. Not for the casual reader, this book will be of particular interest to specialized collections in dance and the performing arts. Carolyn M. Mulac, Chicago P.L. Review

"Foster elegantly and seamlessly integrates the Africanist improvisational aesthetic into her lively, detailed picture of Bull's world, realigning a landscape that has too long suffered from ethnocentric skew."―Brenda Dixon Gottschild, author of Digging the Africanist Presence in American Performance"This is an extremely important book. By adopting Richard Bull's tactic of personifying 'the dance' as if it were a speaking, thinking person, Foster's book forces us to think about dance as a way of knowing, and about the ways of knowing that will be most useful for our understanding of dance as a social practice and a social force."―George Lipsitz, Professor of Ethnic Studies, University of California, San Diego

‘It has all the cannot-put down quality one could wish for in such a story. Absolutely ideal for the age group but those older would also enjoy reading it. The 21 chapters are short and would be excellent to read to younger children who still enjoy a bedtime story. The Gospel is interwoven throughout as the life and ministry of Gladys unfolds.' (The Gospel Magazine (Nov/Dec 2003))TRY ANOTHER TRAILBLAZERAs well as Gladys Aylward No Mountain too High, I'd recommend that you look at Amy Carmichael, Rescuer by night. This makes up a nice set of female role models from a variety of different background.Amy was from Ireland and was a bit of a dreamer.Gladys was from London and definitely working class.Isobel Kuhn was from America and well educated. It just goes to show that it doesn't matter where you are from or what your background is - God has a job for you to do. I recommend NO MOUNTAIN TOO HIGH, as a youth biography of Gladys Alward. This book takes the reader on an exciting a walk thru the life experiences of Gladys Alward,a British-born woman who felt God calling her to missionary work. Trusting the Lord, her travels take her across Russia to her destination --China-- where she lives, ministers and eventually dies. The author does well in illustrating the difficulties she faced, and the faith that kept her loving. Upon arrival in China they threw mud at her and called her "foreign devil"; yet she loves them and serves humbly and is assigned the Chinese name Ai-weh-deh which means "righteous one." Upon finishing the final chapter last night I proclaimed aloud: "What an awesome woman!" I believe that you will do the same. Surely Gladys Alward was a unique woman, uniquely called, uniquely used... but throughout the book I was challenged by the thought, "Look what God does through those who simply serve him. What about me?"I read this book aloud to my children (ages 9-13). Every chapter has enough dialog, action, spiritual insight, and often unresolve that each night they pled, "Come on Dad, can't we read another chapter--just one more?" Young readers will find this a compelling easy-reader. I'd also recommend it for Church library and/ or summer reading club--so give it away when you're done with it--or better yet, buy two copies and bless someone. If you're reading this aloud to children, you'll want to take advantage of the "Thinking Further" pages at the end of the book which assist adults in asking thoughtful follow-up questions after each chapter. I wish I had books like this placed in my hands as a young Christian.

Fantastic, inspiring story. The morals and life lessons along the way, (like perseverance, selflessness and work ethic), lead to meaningful discussions as I read this to my... boys! That's right, my two bear-cub boys were super intrigued with the story, always asking for one more chapter! I suppose the suspense and tension throughout the story kept them on edge and wanting more. I'm sure girls would love this story too- I know I am certainly inspired by this woman! This book gets 5 stars in my book for proper grammar and usage, an interesting story line and high moral content.

We homeschool and I chose this book as we are trying to learn more about missionaries. I read it aloud so even our younger children could hear the story. Once we had finished the first chapter, they were hooked! Each day, I heard "When can we read more 'Gladys'?" They do love when I read out loud to them, but this story really was special. Gladys has a sense of humor and exuded a strong will when necessary. I liked changing my voice a bit to "become" her to reflect this and the children often found her quite funny. In searching for more on this remarkable lady, I found the movie starring Ingrid Bergman (on Amazon Prime). I highly recommend this as a pairing- but read the book first! Hollywood does change a few details, but we knew the full inside story already- so it was enjoyable, and very "wholesome". My husband watched along with us- he had not heard the book, or her story before but became quite interested as he watched and began asking the kids questions for more details. Overall, a great experience for us, learning more about a strong follower of Christ. We are now reading the CorrieTen Boom book (an amazing Christian woman in her own right!) and so far, we are equally as impressed with the writing (plan to review when we're finished).

This is a great book! I read it during a mission study entitled .PERSPECTIVES ON MISSION. At the time I was going on a mission trip to the Amazon River. It helped to know that Miss Aylward had triumphed over a multitude of adversities.

I have watched the movie called "The Inn of the Sixth Happiness" that tells the story of Gladys Aylward and was trying to find a book on her life when I found this one for the kindle. I have just started reading the book but have enjoyed it greatly. I commend Gladys Aylward for not letting other people tell her that she wasn't qualified to follow her dream.

Heard pieces of this story at lunch time on radio station was glad to fill in the gaps and read the rest of the story of this persistent woman. I've passed this one on to my daughter to read.

Great companion book to the old movie "Inn of 6th Happiness". Love to see movies that are based on true stories.

Awesome book for devotional time with children

I really enjoyed the first 2 books in the series. They were imaginative, clever and had good characters. This one was a bit of a letdown.Minor spoilers ahead. This book picks up about 16 years later with Wren, the daughter of the previous main characters Hester and Tom. Wren is a rather annoying, typical teen, suffering typical teen angst about her parents and boys. It makes for some dull reading until the plot finally gets moving. She doesn't evolve much as a character or become particularly likable. You don't really care what happens to her.Hester is suddenly a very violent, murderous person and it doesn't quite gel with her character in the previous books. She murders a number of people in brutal ways and seems to enjoy it. This is treated very casually by the author, which I found disturbing for a book aimed at juveniles. His approach to sex is completely chaste, but he doesn't hesitate to depict murder and violent, bloody death. The book ends on a series of cliffhangers, with characters being put in some unlikely and rather forced situations. I still plan to read the next book and hope it is better than this one.

I'm not sure my 3 star rating is entirely fair. The series is interesting and the books all fairly well written. However, Reece has populated his world with hard to like characters. Hester Shaw, who wasn't so bad, and even understandably surly in the first novel, has become entirely detestable by the third novel. She isn't an intriguing anti-hero like a Mad Max. She is just an awful selfish person. The one character who seemed really admirable, Anna Fang has been turned into an unlikable monster. All these unpleasant people make it hard to even want to read the books.

I don't know.I was super excited to read the third book but frankly, the characters have changed so much. Tom and Hester are grown up,married, with a child, and they're just no longer the same at all. This one is much darker, a bit more violent and a little disappointing because unlike the last two, there's no happy ending with Tom and Hester flying off in the Jenny Hanniver into the bright sunset. Perhaps the final book will be a little happier and less dark?

I loved this book! Because we have had 2 books to really get to know and care about the characters this book, was able to build on generational narratives and tie together some deeper emotional plot lines. Lots of great twists and action, moving from many different worlds. Well done!!

The constant shift of Point-of-Views (headhopping) was distracting, but the story was decent. I’m not sure I like where the author is taking Hester Shaw, or what he’s making her into, but I won’t give away spoilers.Yes, I’ll pick up the final book in the series, just to see how the story is wrapped up.

Mortal engines really should have been a one book show. The story is very forced and progresses poorly.

These books are really easy popcorn kind of reads, that you can knock out real quick. That being said, I put this book down multiple times and just kind of finished it to finish it. Being 3 books in, you would think by now that by now the reader would have a real affinity for the main characters, but I found that I like them less than ever. Also, an editor needed to help clean up some of the dialog here because its beyond awful.

An excellent riveting installment to an outstanding adventure! I am starting to read the fourth and final installment to find out the exciting ending of this great tale!..
