Great (but somewhat dated) thumb-nail biographies of the people who were genuine "movie stars" when I was"alive". Johnny Depp and Brad Pitt are about the only two I recognize today. Great read if you are into the movie biz and the stories of the people you often see on the free (antenna) cable channels. I would recommend it for those over 60 and went to the movies. Definitely a "nostalgia" trigger and most enjoyable. I wish Mr. Maltin and one of his young associates would come up with an updated version, but maybe there just are too many one hit wonders today to fill up the book.

By far, the best of his books for Classic moviie lovers.

I have had this book for almost 20 years (1995). It is the BEST book for mini-bios in entertainment B U T (& this is a big BUT):it is in DIRE need of updating! I've been waiting for a new edition since 1998 & would rush to buy one if it was available, even giving a high rating on-line and making the comment that it would be a tough choice to decide who would be included in a second edition.Now that I'm 20 years older and retired, I guess I can understand why Leonard Maltin wants to cut back his workload since he is giving up his Movie Guides. Maybe that will give him the time to make this Encyclopedia current. I have relied on his work for decades & will really miss not having his reviews to depend on, which I find to be 99% spot on.Come on, Leonard, how about it? How about an update? We're all waiting!Now that I'm 20 years older & retired, I guess I can understand Leonard Maltin's decision to cut back his workload (I've purchased his Movie Guide every year for nearly 40 years). I am one of those people who depend on his work, though on occasional my opinion will differ a bit, but he is pretty much spot on. Since he is stopping his yearly Guides, maybe he will have the time to make this Encyclopedia current.

With the possible exception of my books of movie ratings and summaries, LEONARD MALTIN'S MOVIE ENCYCLOPEDIA is my most helpful movie reference book. Any time I'm watching a movie I make sure to have this book close by. It's written in a very astute and knowledgeable manner, and major movie people especially get a good career-wide treatment. Theatrical films are the emphasis here, though there are a few references to people's television work too. I also like the fact that this book covers such a wide array of movie-makers, from directors to actors to costume designers to music composers, and others. Often after I look up a movie in one of my movie ratings books, I'll then consult LEONARD MALTIN'S MOVIE ENCYCLOPEDIA to see how that film ranks in importance within a person's entire career, so it's been very valuable in that regard too.I should note that since the book was published in 1995, it's mostly helpful to "classic" movie fans such as myself, so it DOES need to be updated (thus I give it 4 stars rather than 5). It's true that there are some web resources such as IMDB that have more listings of films and are more updated than this book is, yet those sites are not usually written as well, and I've seen many cases where IMDB tells little or nothing about a person, other than film listings. Also, I was at first disappointed that many people are omitted, yet I came to realize that the book could either be composed of good write-ups on fewer people, or shorter write-ups on more people, so I'm glad it's the former. Perhaps the book should be longer and split into 2 volumes so it would not be too unwieldy, since it's already about 1000 pages. But then, I imagine sales would decline as a result. As for the criticism of some reviewers that this book is highly inaccurate, I don't pretend to be a film scholar, yet in consulting other sources I have NOT found many errors in LEONARD MALTIN'S MOVIE ENCYCLOPEDIA. It would be helpful if the book included a photo of each person, in case I don't know who someone is.Highly recommended, though it does need updating.

Initially about a year ago I made the mistake of following the other reviews which panned the book, and did not buy it. I then gradually realized that some of my favorite short bios on IMDB.com were excerpted from Maltin's Encyclopedia. Of course at that point I bought it. There are few, if any, other volumes that quickly give you the sum-up and low-down on 2,000 movie industry people. To say the book has errors and omissions is to me ridiculous...a perfect book would cost a few thousand dollars. Meanwhile, IMDB.com is available as a backstop for searching out hundreds of thousands of details, which wouldn't fit in a reasonably sized volume anyway. Generally speaking, I've gone wrong far more often in rejecting something based on a review or an opinion about a book, movie, etc., than in consuming something recommended -- you can always bail out if a recommender was wrong.

Not a great book for outside professionals. It is better suited for inside sales people.

This is by far the best book I've read so far that focuses on cold calling in a B2B environment. It's very well written. It must be noted that this book is for those going after "high hanging fruit sales" - ie: companies who already have a supplier for your product or internal resource, difficult to penetrate organizations with layers of bureaucracy, etc. If you want to 'ground and pound' a list of numbers and walk away with only the easiest stuff, this *isn't* your book - go for Scott Channell's book "7 Steps to Sales Scripts for B2B Appointment Setting". Totally different philosophy.

If you have no exposure to sales then this might be a good place to start. That said, let me sum up the book...do some basic research on a prospect before you call. I might add the title is a bit misleading. The author postulates that if you properly prepare for a cold call (excuse me, "Smart Call") then you will eliminate fear, failure and rejection. That is not entirely true. You can prepare well for a public speech but that doesn't necessarily remove any physiological manifestations of fear of public speaking. The book is full of tips on how to help you prepare for the call. There is pretty much nothing in there about how to calm anxiety or work through fear of rejection.

Thinking that I have "sold" myself and services for over 30 years, I turned to this book since my direction has changed. Previously my sells were to friends and people that I have helped for many years....some for multi-generations! Now, I am "cold calling" and working to sell and simultaneously create friendships. It is wonderful but many times I have become frustrated and over-whelmed.Smart Calling taught me many new things and verified some "truths" that I had just poked around the edges like treating the receptionist or executive secretaries like CEOs.There is SO MUCH more that this book with dog eared pages, highlights and notes will be on my desk for those times when I need inspiration, insight and truly to help clear the cobwebs when writing a proposal. It will be my go-to for quite a while!

If you're looking to take the pain and friction out of cold calling and be perceived as a genuine consultant that can help--and not a pushy salesperson that just wants a paycheck--then you should read this book.While this book is written mainly for sales professionals, it applies to anyone that needs to sell their products or services as one of the many "hats" they wear in their business (which is just about everyone who is in business for themselves, whether they're a marketing consultant or lawyer).This book covers many techniques and strategies that will help with your prospecting, such as...- How to immediately warm a prospect up to you in your first call.- A great way to keep a prospect from hanging up on you before you even get a chance to explain why he should listen to you.- How to create the perception that you are a top-flight professional, not a desperate salesperson.- How to deal with rejection and stay interested in making more calls.- And more...Like anything else, becoming a good salesperson takes a lot of practice, but this book will speed up the process considerably.Please keep writing books, Art!

I highly recommend the book. I have a startup business and sales was not my strongest area of expertise. You will note that I used the word “was” instead of is, because the knowledge I received from this book has been phenomenal. Not only have my phone sale skills been improved, but I am able to apply the same techniques to networking events and everyday conversations. I am happy to say that my persona is changing from “the bull in the china shop” to a polished professional. This book has given me the ability to pull the sales rope down the path instead of trying to push the rope and go nowhere

The book is fairly well written, a bit wordy in some areas. However, the advice is OK in parts but much of it is out of date. This would have been fine in its time, but now, things have changed so drastically that telemarketers are having to change tactics and presentations completely. I think the author knows telemarketing. An up-dated book with some really critical re-writes on his part might be welcome by telemarketers. They are having a hard time right now and many of them are just leaving the business. Also, potential customers have to deal with out-sourced callers from the Philippines and India who are making it hard for anyone calling a business here in this country because they aggravate business owners so much that they don't want to talk to anyone and get mad that you even called. An updated book addressing this and other economical problems in today's business world would certainly be an asset.

Finally. Art has written a 21st Centrury classic about selling by phone. Gone are the teles-ales tricks that made teles-sales synomous with sleaze. This book is about what every salesperson who works by phone really needs to know today: How to treat the customer with respect, how to be consultative and not transactional, how to make quality calls, how to research and make calls that make sense. Use of the methodology Art advocates has another real benefit... reprsentatives who use his psychology like their job a whole lot better because they receive less rejection, achieve more success, and become more committed employees.In short, this book is about professional selling by phone in 2010.Having worked with inside sales teams extensively during the last 15 years, I know firsthand that Art's methodology works. MP Robinson is a Canadian military historian whose research is focused on Cold War era armoured and mechanized warfare. Author Sy Montgomery and photographer Keith Ellenbogen join a group traveling up the Amazon led by aquarist Scott Dowd to learn about how the pet fish industry is actually helping the Amazon ecosystem and economy. Meet the people who catch the little tetras native to the Amazon and the village that even holds a festival in their honor every year.I think everyone's knee jerk reaction to hearing about someone trapping fish and taking them away from their native environment to be pets is to fight against it. Scott Dowd actually says that was his first reaction too. But the science is showing that catching the fish is actually good for the fish and their environment, and the ability of the people to make a living catching these tiny fish is preventing them from turning to other occupations that would destroy the rainforest. So believe it or not, catching and selling these little fish lets them live longer and is saving the rainforest and the other creatures that live there. It really is an amazing story of an unusual ecological solution, and I'm glad Montgomery was able to create this book to get the word out. Ellenbogen's photos really help you get a better sense for what the Amazon is like since they didn't photoshop them and many have a dusty rosy tint. Montgomery's account of his one photo shoot made me shiver. Ellenbogen is a gutsy guy. I don't think I could what he did. Overall, a fantastic book that helps you really get to know a real village of people on the Amazon and understand a unique economic/ecological solution. It should make many readers want to go to their local pet shop and see if they can buy some of the fish these people have caught and support this effort (the fish have GI "geographical indication" status - look for Río Negro tetras).Notes on content: No language issues. Some of the outfits in the fish festival are basically bikinis with added decor. A documented case of a man who had a parasite swim up his urinary tract is mentioned, not shown. There's a fish autopsy photographed. The book addresses some common Amazon creature fears and a death or two are mentioned.

It ended up being just as bad, or worse, than self diagnosing on the inter-webs.I do wish everyone good lock with their woes, however!

I had flipped through this book in less than 20 minutes. It's OK but nothing you can't find on Google. I know, Google isn't a doctor but this book doesn't go in to any great detail for anything, and it shouldn't. It's a good reference but if you panic about your health this book won't do much good, see your doctor.

Maybe they should rename this book "Am I laughing?!" This book spoke to my inner hypochondriac and my humor. With 2 kids I am constantly googling and worrying. This is an amazing and fun reference guide for any parent or person. I am going to buy for my friend Ralph who always thinks he is on the verge of death and my parents in Florida, who think every cold I or their grandkids get is the apocalypse.

About the Author

Ethan M. Rasiel was a consultant in McKinsey & Co.'s New York office. His clients included major companies in finance, telecommunications, computing, and consumer goods sectors. Prior to joining McKinsey, Rasiel, who earned an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, was an equity fund manager at Mercury Asset Management in London, as well as an investment banker. Paul N. Friga worked for McKinsey & Co. in the Pittsburgh office after receiving his MBA from the Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina. He has conducted consulting projects relating to international expansion, acquisition and strategic planning, education, water, and other industries. He has also consulted for Price Waterhouse. He is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in Strategy at Kenan-Flagler and is Acting Director of the North Carolina Knowledge Management Center.

This is a good business book. If you are completely new to consulting, or making data-driven decisions much like a consultant, this is a good book to get a general idea of how to structure thoughts and communicate clearly. The book is broken down into three sections: analyzing problems, managing (client, team, self), and presenting.Section one, on analyzing problems, does not lead you through a business case or prepare you to interview with a firm, which is seemingly what many expected, based on customer reviews. It does provide, at a high level, concepts to explore further: being hypothesis-driven, working with issue trees, synthesizing.Section two, presenting, is the section I got the most out of. This section provides a clear way to get your message across. I had heard most of it before ("Tell them what you are going to tell them. Tell them. Tell them what you told them.") but the ideas for creating single charts in PowerPoint presentations and avoiding reading from outlines on the screen made me reminisce of countless crappy presentations in class.The book ends with tips on managing the client, team, and self. The client information had some insights (they are future business). So much has been written on managing teams and self but Rasiel and Friga do explain its relevance in the book and keep it brief.Again, good business book. A fifth star would have been given for providing follow up reading or tips on developing the skills and techniques that are only touched on.

This book is not as insightful as how the title makes it out to be. It misses the fundamental point is that the reason Mckinsey is so successful is because it knows the subject matter cold. Or at least it knows it from one client in the industry to apply it to another.Its great to have the frameworks and ideas discussed in the book from a theoretical standpoint but the authors really need to acknowledge the whole subject matter concept. Not everybody reading this book will have the benefit of an org with a 120 year legacy (and knowledge practices on how to acquire subject matter expertise).The book should have recognized that from the outset, and at least made an attempt on how to go about (in a simpler way) the process by which the reader should acquire it.

If you know consulting... not for you. If you know McKinsey..maybe self congratulatory remembrances?? If you are looking to penetrate deeper into your craft (consulting)... AVOID. This is a continuation in a series of commercials for the”firm”.

Ok, everyone wants to know how McKinsey does it. Works with leading companies, drives corporate strategy, has great influence and often wind up CEOs in their own right.Unfortunatley this book does not deliver in any depth in my opinion. It is more of a casual conversation about McKinsey, how great it is with breif discussions of how they work.Notions such as 'always involve your client' and 'recognize that you may not always have great data' are obvious and not worth the price of the book -- even if you purchased it used -- which I did.If you really want to know how the McKinsey mind works I heartly recommend K. Ohmae's "The mind of the strategist" Ohmae was Mr. Strategy at McKinsey and his book really shows you what's in the mind of this influencial company and its consultants.The two who authored this book, are really trading on McKinsey's name, brand and reputation. Its a shame and do not be lured in by the title, read Ohmae's book.

Truly an excellent book to read about McKinsey that helps you appreciate the first and many of their best practices. Any management consultant would benefit from this read.

Is this a 5 star book or a 2.5 star book?Well, it depends which of these 2 questions are you trying to answer:1) Are you trying to find out the consulting methodology that the Firm uses in order to solve problems and have their clients come back for more?2) Are you trying to find out what analytically consulting tools does the Firm uses?If you have selected number 1, then you will love (5 star) this book, because it is a window into the McKinsey world and it primarily focuses on the consulting methodology used by the Firm, but at a high level. (It also touches upon a few problem solving tools like the Issue Tree, Quick and Dirty Test, Hypothesis and Decision/Logic tree, but at a superficial level.)If you have selected number 2, then you will be disappointed, since the authors show only a few tools and, even then, they only go into it at a high level; therefore, you might be inclined to rate this book poorly.

This is deception. The book is useless. Buyers, take it from me, buy Case in Point and save yourself the waste. They used the "McKinsey".

Interesting, and occasionally inspiring. However, I wish we could get a deeper version with more examples and/or cases. I’d recommend it as an inspirational tool.

I grew up in a time when making sock puppets was common way to create a beloved toy. Sock Puppet Madness brings back so many good memories! I am going to use Marty's ideas for an after-school enrichment class in my school. He has so many good ideas for characters that connect with the younger generation. His great sense of humor makes the reading of the instructions a ton of fun!

Our entire family from 6 years to 70 years did this project over Christmas vacation. We had a blast and the puppets were incredible!!!

Sock Puppet Madness gives you easy-to-follow instructions to make 35 of Marty Allen's signature sock puppets (from his web video series as well as his portrait photography). However, it's not just a how-to book. The biographies that Allen provides with each of his characters reminds readers that they are making *characters*, not puppets, and that these characters can have lives of their own in your imagination. Imagine being introduced to all the guests at a bizarre cocktail party, and being so engrossed with their personalities that you don't realize that there's someone else's hand up their backside. That is what this book is like.

A great COFFEE TABLE BOOK and/or CRAFT BOOK!!!!!! A perfect activity to do with your children that you to (adults!!!) will enjoy. I can't wait to create these creatures with my nieces the next time I visit with them. I originally bought the book for them but once I got it I had to get a second one because I wanted it. The beautiful illustrations, layout of the book and stories about each puppet character make this more than just a craft/ how to book but a 'story' book and piece of art in its own right. The whit, humor, and creativity Marty uses in his writing and the character he creates makes it enjoyable to look through for both adults and children. This a perfect activity for children's parties and to be honest I wanted to give it a try so I had a couple of friends over, had a couple glasses of white wine and created some amazingly awesome puppets. I have to say that I was able to follow along and create a sock puppet as were my friends and if we can do it a 6 year old will have no problem. I love this book!!! Get it!!!

I've been buying puppet portraits from Marty for years and when people come over they immediately become happy and want to know where to get his portraits. Well, now that I have my own Sock Puppet Madness Book, my friends are loving in, flipping out about it.
