About the Author

I was born in Selby England in 1937 and moved to and grew up in Maracaibo Venezuela. It is there I met my present wife while she was still in utero as her mother, a nurse, was looking after me while she was pregnant with my wife. My wife and I are sometimes called oil babies. After getting my MD at University of British Columbia I went on after my internship at the Toronto General to take a PhD in biochemistry and neurochemistry at the Montreal Neurological Institute and McGill University.      After finishing my training I taught pharmacology to Medical students, dentistry students and pharmacy in the Department of Pharmacology University of Toronto. I also became a Medical Research Council Scholar. Due to domestic rearrangements, I suddenly had my present wife (who had grown up with me in Venezuela) and five children under the age of eight. At our wedding the children represented the whole audience. Academic life could not financially support this. I moved back to Victoria, British Columbia to start general practice.      My interest in thyroid started over 15 years ago. Also I became interested in Breast Cancer among other things about 10 years ago. I strongly feel we should have theories for medical illnesses even if they are wrong. It stimulates researchers to test the theories and more advances can be made. Other fields of science have many competing theories such as astronomy and physics and mathematics. I feel that medicine would advance faster if there were more theories to test. Over the last 12 years I have formed a library of 5000 reprints and books on breast cancer, thyroid hormone and iodine.

Iodine is a radically important topic for anyone with a breast, prostate, or thyroid who wants to live a long healthy life. This book, written in 2001, may have been a valuable early pioneer in the recent revival of this crucial aspect of nutrition that the medical profession has brushed aside, but today there are better books.I give it 4 stars so you'll consider iodine and read my review, but I do not suggest this book as the best source. I'm very hesitant to denigrate the book because it might give a spark of insight to some researcher, but I doubt that the general public will get much more out of the book than the gems I pass on in this review. His theories of iodine's role in evolution and his postulates for proposed verification are just not readily applicable to those of us seeking practical advice on iodine. His rough hand-sketched illustrations added nothing to my understanding, the many typos and/or typesetting errors were distracting, and there were often grammatical ambiguities that left me wondering whether he was advocating or refuting some assertion. I also wondered whether his logic was quite faulty or I was just in over my head (I think the former). In short, Dr Derry (MD neurologist) postulates (or declares?) that every adult should be getting a bit more than 2 to 3 mg of iodine per day for cancer prevention, thyroid health, immune response, and general well-being. Any woman contemplating pregnancy should study iodine prior to conception. Even conventional sources like WHO confirm that iodine deficiency is a (or THE!) major cause of low IQ and mental retardation worldwide.Correlation does not prove causation, but he stresses that the Japanese eat perhaps 8~10 mg of iodine daily, through seaweed, and have the world's smallest thyroids and lowest rates of breast cancer. Japanese who migrate to the USA and adopt our diet also adopt our rates of breast cancer.Until the 1960's, Iceland did even better by feeding fish scraps to their dairy cows, but once they began to follow world standards for maximum allowable iodine in milk, their breast cancer rate increased tenfold.Women living in warmer climates need to generate less body heat and therefore use fewer thyroid hormones (T3, T4) and therefore their thyroids consume less iodine, leaving more for their breasts. Therefore, one would expect lower breast cancer rates at lower latitudes, and that is true. An intriguing correlation.I don't recall Derry ever mentioning the prostate, but it also needs iodine and my own (thoroughly "amateur") hypothesis is that a prostate starved for iodine grows just as a thyroid does. So an enlarged prostate is a sort of goiter, and men can prevent that by getting more iodine (which will let them sleep through the night). Other iodine books do address the prostate, but they all seem to put most attention on the breasts.Dr Brownstein's book on iodine (search Amazon or Google for his site) is highly, highly (and highly) repetitive to the point of absurdity but is nonetheless a very valuable reference. Lynn Farrow's book The Iodine Crisis is the most thorough, readable, and inspirational book on why we should all learn about iodine and act accordingly. (I avoid most supplements yet buy 12.5 mg iodine through Amazon and take them once or twice a week.)Derry's extensive source references may be a gold mine for those willing to delve much deeper, but unless you're an MD, researcher, or fanatic (I say with positive appreciation) I'd suggest one of these other books. If you have other recommendations, please leave a comment below.Learn about iodine!!! (and NOT from conventional MDs who were taught that it's toxic)

I recently was diagnosed with breast cancer and had a mastectomy. Several months later, just by chance I tried taking iodine to help my thyroid function better as I have suffered from many health issues over the last 20 years, and after 3 days on iodine. I could not believe how much better I felt. I finally felt normal again after years of depression and no energy. I did not expect that to happen just by taking iodine, so I started looking online and was shocked to find the connection between iodine deficiency and just about every health problem I've suffered. It's a travesty that doctors are not being taught about the benefits of iodine and the proper dosing. Medical schools are being funded by the pharmaceutical industry and it seems that they don't want to prevent cancer because so many people make money by treating it. I can attest to that.

In this book you will find what the vast majority of doctors don't know about iodine. For some this book will be a life saver, for others a way to better health and prevention from a variety of illnesses related to subclinical iodine deficiency. The traditional Japanese diet provides about 100 times the amount of iodine that we get in the typical American diet. Dr. Derry and other experts in the field consider our diet to be extremely deficient in iodine and greatly responsible for the statistics that shows that we have about ten times the amount of prostate cancer and three times the number of breast cancers per capita. When you read the page with all the potential benefits from iodine (from detoxification to vital organ protection) you would want to make copies for all of your loved ones.

Breast Cancer and Iodine by David Derry MD PhD, is a unique 100 page volume which presents the academic case for iodine as prevention and treatment of breast cancer. The book should be handed out freely during October Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Although written for the lay reader, it should be required reading for all medical students, breast surgeons, mammographers, breast cancer oncologists and any doctor who orders mammograms. With ten pages of medical references including the work of B A Eskin and W R Ghent, Dr. Derry discloses the remarkable connection between iodine deficiency, fibrocystic breast disease and breast cancer. Iodine's anti-cancer activity lies in its control of apoptosis, or programmed cell death.Derry presents case studies complete with surgical pathology confirmation showing regression of both fibrocystic breast disease and carcinoma-in-situ breast cancer with iodine treatment. He also presents a case report case of infiltrating breast cancer involving the skin which regressed after prolonged application of topical Lugol's iodine solution.I can report from the experience of my own family members that iodine supplementation causes regression of fibrocystic breast disease.Derry's ideas in the book could be easily revised into an NIH grant proposal to research and confirm the role of iodine. To do so would advance the nation's health and be a great public service. Iodine is safe, inexpensive and readily available without a prescription. A US policy of iodine supplementation matching the Japanese dietary intake of iodine could very well be our best preventive measure against breast cancer.Jeffrey Dach MD

One fine morning, Sir Cumference, Lady Di of Ameter, and their son, Radius, sat eating breakfast in King Arthur’s castle.             Suddenly, the door flew open and a young knight ran into the room. It was Vertex, Radius’s best friend. “I’ve found out why King Arthur called us all here!” Vertex exclaimed.             “The King wants to choose an heir,” Vertex explained. “Five knights are competing for the honor. I’m one of them.”             “You would make a fine king,” Sir Cumference said.             “That’s right,” agreed Radius. “You helped the King make peace with the Euclideans last year.”             “Yes, but now I have to solve the puzzle on this parchment,” Vertex said. “The King has hidden his sword, Edgecalibur. The knight who finds it will be the next king.”

Some years ago, we stumbled upon these books at the library. They were an instant hit - every single one in the Sir Cumference series! We check out lots of books but this one the children remembered. In fact, we hadn't checked these out for a couple of years when one son started a new geometry section in math and asked me to get these again so he could review! My preschooler thinks of these as fun stories and enjoys the illustrations while the older crew is making the connections to mathematical concepts they are learning. For example, one child always keeps diameter and radius straight because of the book characters (Radius is the little guy!). I highly recommend this series as enjoyable literature that will help your children remember their geometry. The books also have an object or character (jester, seagull, rat, cat, etc.) that appears on most pages which is an extra bit of fun to look for. I love the rich colors and oil painting technique too (I may be wrong about the oil painting but that's the feel of it). I decided these belong in our home library and was especially pleased that Amazon was running its buy 3 get 1 free promotion just then.

Big fan of Cindy Neushwander's Sir Cumference series. We have them all so it was nice to find a new installment. We had been reading this series to our daughter when she was five years old. She loves them now even at seven. Earlier, she didn't understand the mathematical concepts in the books but over time she began to "discover" things about the book and would run tell us. Love that the author was able to engage children and make math concepts not only fun, but able to show them in use throughout the books.

The Sir Cumference books are great for kids interested in math. My 8yo son, who loves math, devours these, though my 8yo daughter who is not interested in math, finds these uninteresting as well. But they teach concepts in a really great, fun way.

We enjoyed this book a lot. In fact we enjoy most all of the Sir Cumference books alot.

Thank you as described and very timely arrival!

This is a great book. It has lots of mathematical elements while also being fun for middle school students. I, as a math teacher, enjoyed reading this book to my students. The math terms that tie the book together are very creative in the way they are presented. If you are reading this book to a class of middle school students, it will take from ten to fifteen minutes to read completely if the class is attentive. The math described in the book can help students to remember those terms later.

The students really enjoyed this Sir Cumference book. I really enjoy the Sir Cumference series, and the students do also. They good hooked by the story, and they learn Math concepts as well.

Great book my son is eager to see what happens with the frog. Repeative so this is a must for early language learners.

The patterned text and predictable pictures (for the next animal encounter)are excellent for young listeners and beginning readers. The color/blackand white pages also have a predictable pattern. After teaching kindergarten for over31 years, I've never found a group of children that didn't quickly chime in,"Jump, Frog, Jump." This is a favorite book to share. It is also fun to dramatize.

Perfect for toddlers language development--point to pictures, find the frog, or read the text for older children.

Classic book that's very cute! My husband loved this book when he was young, so we purchased it for our 2 young children and they love it just as much as daddy!! They love saying the "jump frog jump" part in the book. This book is fun and very entertaining!

One of these books which are not that interesting but my kids had to buy for a school report

Toddler not so amused by it. We usually skip this one when it's reading time.

Great book for a small child. Very cute. Bought as a present for a child. He loved it. Age appropriate. Good buy.

Cute story

If you love horses and understand the bond that occurs between you and your horse...or if you desire to have that bond, you will love this book. I almost gave it four stars because, in my estimation, only one thing was missing; there are very few pictures in this book. Why do we not see more of what the book is telling us.; the winding miles of fence at Meadow Farm or Claiborne, Secretariat at play, at work, the faces of the people the author speaks about, etc? (If, by chance, they are located in the back of the book (I am reading the Kindle version and this review comes before the acknowledgements, etc. If there are pictures in the back, then please forgive me) I'm just sad about not being able to enjoy some of those photos of which the author speaks. This has whetted my appetite to read more about Secretariat (which I thought I knew already but so many more to learn) This books pulled a lot of emotion from me and I appreciated the author's desire to not only tell a story of Secretariat but of the unknown, seldom celebrated story of a man almost lost to the pages of time, Eddie Sweat...Secretariat's groom during the glory years. What a beautiful picture which has been painted by Mr. Scanlan of that man who loved "his" horse. Mr. Scanlan is a horse owner also and he states his desire to become a better horseman because of what he learned about the devotion of Mr. "Shorty" Sweat to "the Horse God Built."I was 18 the year Secretariat won the Triple Crown; I would be graduating HS in a few weeks. Too busy with my own horse in the way of any horse-crazy girl who lives and breathes the equine, I did not follow Thoroughbred racing though I could tell you, loving all things HORSE, the Triple Crown winners and the year they won. I owned a quarter horse named Barzal Bravo ("Bozo" for short) with thoroughbred racing blood making up half his pedigree. Helping my horse-centered world along, my family lived in the same equestrian subdivision as several of the Los Alamitos Race Course trainers and their "lay off" horses. I was often at those early morning workouts at the track with my horsey girlfriends; ethereal moments about which the author writes. My bedroom walls were covered with the daily race results from Los AL. Because I did not have access to much money on my own and most of what I did earn went to support my own horse's upkeep, I did not buy magazines or books to read and thus knew very littleabout this new "Big Red"...plus, I was a Man O' War purist in my heart. However, everyone had heard of Secretariat and I became a believer after watching him win the Derby and Preakness. As the day of the Belmont arrived, my parents had taken us camping. I only agreed to go if my dad made sure we had a working TV to watch the race. As Secretariat rounded the last turn pulling away, my emotions spilled out. As an equine artist, I appreciate the beauty of the horse and this was a thing of beauty...and history. I knew I was watching it being made right in front of me! I screamed! I jumped up in the air. Then as Big Red swept toward the finish line with the cameras struggling to even show the other horses in the race, I laid on the floor and wept like a baby.To this day I cannot watch that race without those emotions welling up inside me and weeping outloud...for the beauty, that wonderful horse, the history, his death and my youth long gone but remembered for a shining moment. Much like other transcendent moments in history when one can remember where theybwere or what they were doing, I

What a wonderful idea, to focus some well-deserved attention on Eddie Sweat, and all the people who work behind the scenes in the racing world. Unfortunately, the book promises more than it delivers, partly due, no doubt, to the fact that Eddie is dead, and any portrait drawn of him relies on second and third-hand accounts. But the book also falls short because of a lack of cohesiveness and structure. Add to that, numerous digressions about the author himself, and it's hard to maintain focus. I also found it a little ironic, in a sad way, that a book about someone who was overlooked, and kept in the background, overlooks Eddie's OTHER great horse, Riva Ridge. I understand the focus was supposed to be on the relationship between Eddie and Secretariat, but do you really think Eddie's pain didn't involve parting from Riva as well? Eddie himself makes it clear how he feels when he talks about going back to Claiborne, and how happy he was when Secretariat AND Riva greeted him. It would have taken only a paragraph or two to give a little consideration to Secretariat's stable-mate. After all, the author certainly gave more space than that to a number of other horses.By the way, if you want to get a sense of what Eddie was like, you can find a video of him with Riva Ridge on YouTube. It's only about five minutes long, but it's wonderful. Search Riva Ridge and Keeneland.

As a person who has been enamored with horses...I loved watching the Triple Crown races since I was a little kid. I fell in love with Big Red the moment I laid eyes on him. More important, I was in awe of the man who was able to take care of him. This book fills in all the information I could only imagine! A great read of the love between a great horse and the man who made and loved him.

As the author states in his epilogue, he starts to write mostly about Secretariat.... and ends up interweaving the story of this horse's favorite person, his groom Eddie "Shorty" Sweat.Well worth the read, this book makes a very compelling argument for the respectful treatment of the horses we encounter and the people entrusted with their care and even more, their well-being.I highly recommend this story.

Very interesting. I didn't know much about the world of horse racing, so the details were all interesting to me. The relationship between Secretariat and his groom, Eddie Sweat, was very touching. I think any animal lover would like this book. I gave a copy as a gift, and that person loved the book as well.

This book was probably unnecessary. It is often rambling and frequently repetive. Poor quality of photographs doesn't help.I expected to find more anecdotes about the horse's day to day, maybe collected and shared by his special groom, Eddie Sweat, and others from shed row.Indeed, I've read a about a few examples of the Big Red's antics that aren't included here. There was too much about Eddie's family circumstances, on whether or not he received his due financially, too much about other famous horses, etc. Too much about the man, too little about the horse.

I read this back to back 2 times. It is that good! Very poignant and sad sometimes - especially at the end. Absolutely fascinating with the relationship between Secretariat and his groomer Eddie. It made me search on-line more videos and history of the great horse. This book really captures and describes Secretariat's character and playful personality. I highly highly reccomend this book to any and all horse fans and especially Secretariat lovers.
