Pirate Hunters: Treasure, Obsession, and the Search for a Legendary Pirate Ship, by Robert Kurson

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of June 2015: Reading about treasure hunters may be more interesting than reading about pirates themselves—there’s always that feeling in the back of the mind that any one of us could get up off the couch right now and begin our search for pirate booty if we wanted to. Of course we probably won’t, and if you read Robert Kurson’s Pirate Hunters: Treasure, Obsession, and the Search for a Legendary Pirate Ship, it will be clear why. It’s hard work, and treasure hunters are special people. Kurson’s book tells the story of John Chatterton and John Mattera, two longtime treasure hunters who get a tip from another veteran about a pirate ship that went down off the Dominican Republic in the 1600s. There’s much to endure in their search—dangerous dives, scouring charts and maps, debt, and encounters with a few modern pirate types—but it’s only after they themselves start thinking like a pirate that they make the progress they’re looking for. A fun, quick, informative read that will have you dreaming of what you could do if only you set your mind to it. – Chris Schluep

This book is engaging, but it's no "Shadow Divers". For one thing, there's not much plot and the author had to sort of create a narrative and stick in bits of Pirate history to glue it all together. Then the two primary personalities come off pretty badly. One is portrayed as crazy-violent, the other as an obsessed ego-maniac. I guess it's all meant to paint a picture, but it's a little too much personal information for me. The book also ends abruptly, with 97% devoted to a fruitless search and 3% a quick summary of what they found. So although I enjoyed reading it, and made it through to the end. It will not be a keeper and is headed to a used book store shortly.BTW, if you have not read "Shadow Divers", for Pete's Sake go get a copy now! Now that was an extraordinary tale.

I read this book after having read Shadow Divers because I enjoy Robert Kurson's writing. This is an easy to read historical account and quiet interesting. However, not nearly as compelling ash Shadow Divers. There is a lot of back story on the main characters; however, the accounting of the actual discovery of the sunken pirate vessel seems almost an afterthought in places. I would have appreciated more about the actual salvage and what they found. The book sort gets to the find, and states "and then they salvaged.. the end" .In contrast, the background on pirate history was extremely fascinating and caused me to research piracy a bit more and read additional accounts of the 17th century pirates. Overall worth your time, but not as good as Shadow Divers.

I don't read a lot of nonfiction and when I do I want it to read as smoothly as fiction. This pretty much fit the bill, with an exciting account of seasoned treasure hunters / divers finding a wreck of a fairly obscure merchant-captain-turned-pirate, Joseph Bannister. The author went off on a multitude of tangents including in depth studies of the lives of the men searching for the ship (which were interesting but not terribly relevant), and I'd say the actual story focusing on the tactical search for the wreck only constituted about half the book. Also, without spoiling the ending, the main characters fly all over the place at great expense doing a ton of primary research, and then the biggest piece of the puzzle ends up being in a newly published book that you can buy on Amazon - that element had a feel of deus ex machina about it. But overall it was an enjoyable and quick read, and I did learn something about Bannister, the treasure hunting "business," and the dangerous techniques used in underwater recovery efforts. Would recommend.

I have enjoyed the collaboration between Kurson, Chatterton, Kohler and now Mattera. Shadow Divers is one on my favorite books. Now this one Pirate Hunters is another. I have two hobbies, diving and treasure hunting, and this second book encompasses both. It is amazing the product that can be created when professionals get together. I nearly finished this book in 2 days. I could not stop reading it. That would have been a record for me.

It was the title of this book that first captured my attention. The fact that the book is based on a true story made it even better! The quest for the Golden Fleece really comes to life in the book. The life of a pirate is described to the point of being able to picture the images in your mind’s eye. The sheer terror of running abreast of a pirate ship and crew causes your heart to beat faster. Clearly, this was not the career for the faint of heart! Sometimes, though, it was a career of necessity. The financial and emotional toll of the men and their families who searched for the Golden Fleece is clearly detailed. This book is about so much more than finding a ship or the treasure sometimes worth millions on it. It’s about doing those things that though you think might be impossible, drive you to the point of knowing who you really are and what you really value. You can’t put a price tag on that!

I love a fast-paced adventure novel, filled with treasure hunters, deep sea divers and an anti-heroic pirate captain. And to find such a story, which also happens to be true....now that's a real treasure! This is the first time I have read Robert Kurson's writing, but I really am impressed by the way he takes a true story and writes non fiction as though it's an exciting adventure tale that just flies by. However, he could not have done this without some fascinating subject matter provided by deep sea divers and treasure hunters John Chatterton and John Mattera. The basis of this story is how Chatterton and Mattera have been commissioned to find the Golden Fleece, a ship captained by the pirate John Bannister. However, not only does Kurson's tale take us from the Dominican Republic to Europe to the States and back again, he also takes us into both the distant and more recent past as we delve into the lives not only of the infamous Bannister but also of Chatterton and Mattera. Pirates, mafia crime rings, German U-boats, battles against cancer and even diving experiences in the shadow of the World Trade Center on 9/11/2001...it's all here in a fast-paced , well-researched piece of non-fiction, that reads like a combination adventure - historical fiction - detective novel.

Robert is a great documentarian, but his characters are already larger than life. John Chatterton MUST be the inspiration for Dirk Pitt. The depth of research necessary for this adventure shows how excruciatingly painful treasure hunting really is. This is one of the best stories I've ever read!

I really enjoyed this book . I felt like I was there too. I loved that pics at the end of the book . I’ve always thought it would be a great adventure to hunt for stuff in the ocean . You made a 73 yr. old ladies dream come true. It was really great. Thanks fellas for a chance at hunting the prize !! Mildred Dawson .

I'll keep this simple:I have never desired to DO art myself before encountering this book. It simplified so many forms of art by boiling down to its fundamental components, clean and concise. Now I love art and feel no intimidation when approaching forms of art new to me. I've even won some local awards for photography and prints I've done using the guidance of this book and this book only. 100% beginner to awards. I don't know what more I could say. LOVE IT!

The book is for my college class, so that is what caused me to choose this particular one. I enjoy the many photos and explanations of the art, which go into fairly good detail in an easy to understand format. It is very easy to find topics or artists in the index and the dictionary is full of great definitions that come in handy for tests and class discussions. I like this book enough to keep it in my personal library even after the class is over.

"Daniel Deronda" was the last novel George Eliot wrote, and it's an appropriate finale to her career -- a lushly-written, heartfelt story about a young man searching for his past (and clues to his future), as well as a vibrant strong-willed young lady who discovers that life doesn't always go your way. Even better, Eliot deftly avoided the cliches and caricatures of the Jewish people, portraying them with love and respect.Daniel Deronda is the ward (and rumored illegitimate son) of a nobleman, who is unsure of his past (particularly of his mother) catching a glimpse of pretty, reckless, arrogant Gwendolyn Harleth at a casino. Gwendolyn (who boasts that she gets everything she wants) is interested in Daniel, but when her family loses all their money, she marries a rich suitor, a relative of Daniel's -- knowing that his mistress and illegitimate children will be disinherited. But she soon finds that her new husband is a sadistic brute, and sees Daniel as her only help.Meanwhile, Daniel rescues the despairing Mirah Lapidoth from a suicide attempt in the river, and he helps the young Jewish singer find a home and friends to care for her. As he helps her find her family, he becomes passionately attached to the Jewish population and their plight, embodied by a dying young visionary and a kindly shopkeeping family. Then he receives an important message -- one that will illuminate his roots, and give him a course for the future. When Eliot published her final novel, it caused a massive stir -- not many novelists tackled the plight of the Jewish population, or how it compared to the gilded upper classes. In a way, "Daniel Deronda" is both a love triangle and an allegory -- Daniel must choose between the pretty, shallow English life (Gwendolyn) or a rich Jewish heritage (Mirah) with a background of tragedy. The biggest problem with Eliot's writing is that it becomes a little too lush and dense at times, and the narrative moves a bit slowly (in the Victorian manner). But that flaw doesn't rob her writing of its power or beauty -- she describes every feeling, gesture and emotion in detail, as well as the sumptuous balls, exquisitely gilded mansions, and every shadowy tree or rich expanse of land ("a grassy court enclosed on three sides by a gothic cloister").Yet the greatest power is in the stories that twine like ivy over the main plot -- a young Jewish girl's search for her family, a sadistic man's search for a wild lovely girl he can break, and especially of the composer Herr Klesmer and his sweet, atypical love story with Miss Arrowpoint. And the last quarter of the book is wrapped in Daniel's search for his own family, culminating in a quietly tense encounter with someone from his long-ago past.Daniel almost seems like a character too good to be true -- unselfish, kind, universally kindly and very intelligent, though possessed of a vaguely searching quality. Gwendolyn is his complete opposite: she has been raised to be selfish, disdainful and immature, but as the book goes on she learns that selfishness doesn't pay -- marriage to the despicable Grandcourt changes her from a selfish little girl into a scarred but stronger woman. The third leg of the triangle is Mirah, who is not given the loving attention that Gwendolyn is, but who is still a compelling figure -- her father tried to sell her, and now she wanders through England searching for her family. And the book is littered with many other striking characters: the sadistic Grandcourt and his creepy servant Lush, the crotchety but kindly Klesmer, the spirited artist Hans, the kindly Sir Hugo and the doomed, strong-willed Mordecai."Daniel Deronda" is a beautiful portrait of a young man's search for his past, and a young woman's struggle with the fruits of her own selfishness. What's more, George Eliot's last novel is a loving, powerful portrait of the Jewish people, in a time when they were caricatured at best.

This is a sleeper of a classic in my opinion. Anyone into classics should give it a read. Of course there are references that you either have to overlook or look up, that have to do with things that were popular at the time. Its Elliot's contemporary novel, her others were set in the past. Her breadth of vocabulary alone takes your breath away, as well as her writing ability and style. I learned more new words in Daniel Deronda than I've learned reading any other single book in the last 10 years. This is really a psychological, philosophical and even political novel, with intense and indelible characters whose inner lives are brought to vivid life. Every character is intricately developed, in all their complexity and contradictions. What I particularly love is author's ability to capture the maturation process, the growth of the characters over the course of events and time. She reveals how even one conversation with a person can cause a change in an individual.

Don't buy this horrible book, or maybe I should say "book". It is a cheap, unreadable digitized version of an 1876 edition. At 11 lines of text per inch, the blurry 6 point type is too densely packed to be read comfortably without a magnifying glass. Some of the pages came out printed at a slant. BiblioLife must know what a poor product this is. If you had the book in front of you and could look at the pages you would never buy it. Of course when you see it online it looks like a normal book. In reality it is useless.

Elliot writes a long, slow-moving drama of character study, tragic marriage, Judaism, family misfortunes with themes of women's liberation and subjection, and personal identity. The novel has two separate stories joined together by Daniel Deronda. Each of them features a compelling woman who is involved with Daniel.I found this much less compelling than Middlemarch, and horribly slow. Most novels this static I would have put down, but this is Elliot and her characters are very well drawn. The novel highlights the repression of women in Victorian society - both of Gwendolen, and Daniel's mother who rebelled. And Mirah herself has been used like a puppet by her father.I'm glad I read it. But it took some time.

Victorian novels are not to everyone's taste with a very leisurely pace, lots of extraneous characters and scenes and endless social interaction, but if you have the patience this is a great book with a couple of great characters, an interesting plot, an author with a great eye for detail, and an eye opening treatment of the place of women and Jews in mid-nineteenth century England. Probably the best defense of Zionism in all of literature and many years before the horrors of Europe's efforts to exterminate the Jews a compelling argument for a Jewish state in the Jews' historical homeland.

If you don't like long (807 pg) Victorian (read: slow paced, richly psychological) novels, I suggest looking into more contemporary works. If you like Victorian works, you'll probably find that the length here is nothing because you'll become absorbed in the richness of the characters, Eliot's incredible writing (she wrote this with an excruciating toothache, too), and unique plot. Understanding the controversy surrounding this novel adds to the understanding of its beauty as well. I definitely recommend this, although I do understand that it's not for everyone.

I LOVE MI SUM BANH MI, I hope that was all spelled right. Have been cooking for 30 +, and the amazing Banh Mi has fed a many kitchen and staff lunches. One of my favorite sandwiches in the name of bread and filler. This book is awesome, if you have NEVER heard of BANH MI. This book is great for people who know a little about this great sandwich of classic French cuisine and one of the first true "fusions" of foods from different regions. This book is extremely repetetive for anyone who has made any version, has any knowledge of this sandwich and its ingredients or flavor profile. You decide where you are, honestly, much better books out there.

Wonderful cookbook! The writing, photos, and organization are top-notch. Overall, working with the "Handbook" is like having a friend teaching and helping out in the kitchen. As noted in the first review, the book is about way more than just sandwiches - some history, family stories, the hunt for perfect bahn mi bread, and best of all, new ways of thinking about food. Ms Nguyen breaks down the delicious bahn mi sandwich into simple elements - crunch of the crust, softness of the crumb, a bit of fat, a umami blast, unctuous fillings, cool and crisp veggie toppings - in a way that I was able to carry over into my other cooking. I was thinking of her meatball bahn mi as I tweaked my usual spaghetti with meatballs recipe for dinner last night - adding finely chopped cilantro stems to the meat, coating the meatballs with panko, and a dash of anchovy paste to the sauce. I bring this up to show how this is a little book that makes one's culinary imagination take flight, as a great cookbook should.More down-to-earth, Ms Nguyen also gives myriad little kitchen hints that I found immediately useful - how to keep cilantro and how to cut it to stay fresh, squeeze quick pickles after salting to get them crisp, how to refresh bread. Not to mention how many of her recipes can be simply transposed onto a bed of rice noodles or lettuce for a delicious meal. If you love to cook, then don't pass up this book!

I'd give this ten stars if I could. I love cookbooks that are readable--not simply lists of recipes. I enjoy curling up on the sofa in front of the fire and opening a cookbook and reading it. The author has done a superb job of interspersing the history of banh mi, the language associated with banh mi, and other cultural details in a well-written (non-info-dumping), entertaining way. Her recipes are flexible, and her tips alone are worth the price of the book (how to keep cilantro fresh--that's worth five stars all by itself!). And if you are just looking for banh mi recipes, and aren't looking for the kind of cookbook you can read simply for the pleasure of reading it, I'm pretty sure you'll give it a glowing review as well--the recipes have clear instructions, easy-to-find ingredients, and plenty of options for substitutions and flexibility.

I got this book two days ago. Last night we had banh mi sandwiches for dinner. They included roast pork, sliced jalapeño and cucumber, and cilantro. I made sriracha aioli and thee kinds of pickles: carrot and daikon, shallot, and red cabbage pickles. The banh mi rolls are from C-Market International grocery here in Des Moines, IA. It is a beautifully done book with a helpful story about banh mi, beaufilul photos, and clear directions. I also recommend her pho book. I bought that one last month.

I've been a fan of the author, following her lovely and delicious blog for some time. This book follows through on what I love about her work -- it's accessible for a home cook, the photography is delightful, the writing is clear, and I'm eager to get in the kitchen and try things out for me and my family. This book features recipes for omnivores, meat-eaters, and vegetarians. Also, because of the way the book is structured, one could easily turn many of these sandwich fillings into main dishes for a non-sandwich meal. In my family, we eat a lot of rice, and I'll definitely be serving things like Crispy Drunken Chicken, Shrimp in Caramel Sauce, and Maggi Steaks with or without bread. But the bread! She includes a recipe for banh mi rolls, but I haven't got to try it yet. When the weather cools down, I'll give it a try. It's written for a heavy-duty stand mixer, which I do not have, but Notes include instructions on how to work it by hand. Probably it would be a bit imposing for someone without a mixer or some bread-making experience; it is not, however, more complicated-looking than recipes I've done before, and it requires no special equipment beyond a spray bottle. There is also a recipe for bao-like buns, or steamed bread, in the "alternative banh mi" chapter. That chapter also features a recipe for lettuce wraps and a salad, perfect for warmer weather meals. Also included is a section on condiments, such as homemade mayo in several variations and some other sauces, and quick pickle recipes. They are refrigerator pickles and as such do not require any special canning techniques. The section which may see the least use in my house is the one on cold cuts; this is not because the recipes look bad, however. To me they look amazing, and I'll be trying some of the sausages...but I'm probably the only one in the house who would love the pâté with chicken or pork, let alone the headcheese terrine. I'll probably make them anyway, at least once, since I'm the cook; if I'm lucky, my housemates will enjoy them too. People with more adventurous families or housemates may get more mileage out of them. (I slightly envy them.)All in all, this is a cookbook I'm happy to have added to my collection, and I'm looking forward to adding its contents to my regular cooking rotation.

I have done so many of the recipes in this book and love them all!! The only thing I have not done yet is making the actual baguette. But the flavors are spot on. If you love the banh mi like I do, this buy this book :) Oh...and then invite me to lunch ;)

I love this book! Well written and great photos! The stories she tells makes it feel like you are hanging around the kitchen with a friend. I think this book is good for beginners as well as advanced cooks.
