Thomas Middleton, one of the greatest of Jacobean dramatists, was born in 1580, the son of a well-to-do London bricklayer. He went to Oxford but seems not to have gained a degree. To put it bluntly: this is a terrible edition of these three classic revenge tragedies. While the text is easy to read and written in standardized English, there are practically no footnotes or scholarly notes that unlock some of the complexities of the vocabulary and the multi-faceted nature of certain scenes. For example, in both "The Revenger's Tragedy" and "The White Devil," there are dozens of lines that are delivered in Latin, but the editors provide no translation of those lines whatsoever! Imagine reading a play, finding that two pages of dialogue are in Latin, and then looking to the bottom of the page to find nothing-- not a glossary, not a translator's note, not a thing!There are far better versions of these texts available that come with a full scholarly apparatus. Give this edition a miss.
I believe the book could have been a lot more accesible with a foot-note system or even a numbered note system. The notes are marked only with '*' and paging back and forth through the text can be (and is) very tiresome. Other than that the book is a great size for travel reading and the font is easily dicipherable.
