Cycling the Pacific Coast is an epic ride, and I am proud to be the author of this new book about such a great adventure.It took me two years of research and many thousands of miles of riding to create the book. I loaded my bike with all the gear needed to be self-supporting--plus the gear to research the book, write about the route and photograph its great places. Pedaling off into the Pacific Coast sunshine is a freeing experience. Ending the days by sinking my toes into chilly ocean water washed away any aches from the day's cycling. Particularly joyful were making new friends around the hiker-biker camp corral, discovering new places along the route, and revisiting some of my favorite places on Earth, such as Northern California's mighty Redwoods. I have tried to capture the sights, sounds and feelings of this journey, as well as provide an accurate route guide. I hope it will help many readers and cyclists enjoy an epic adventure.

I purchased this for my son who is an ardent bicyclist. He loves to take different areas for his rides and does may rides in the our country. This should be just what the cycler ordered!

Can't wait to get started biking the west coast. Reading this book is almost as good as Kerouacs On the Road.

Bill’s book really makes me want to take this trip! The way he writes about the locations and attractions, it’s obvious that he has spent a lot of time on this route, and very recently. But he doesn’t pull any punches on the challenging parts of it, like the traffic and the hilly terrain, and I respect his advice about safety and comfort. And since I wouldn’t be able to do it all in one trip, I appreciate his travel suggestions and itineraries for one- or two-week vacations to ride parts of it, including city tours. He even provides directions to train stations and airports, something you don’t see in other cycling guidebooks. All in all, a thoroughly researched, well-written guide.

I used his book on a bike tour from Florence to San Francisco this summer in addition to having the ACA maps. The book’s ok, I picked it up because it was the newest published text on the route, others being from mid-2000’s or 90’s. I wanted something to critique the basic ACA route, give me heads up about road conditions and provide recommendations on pacing. I wasn’t planning on going very fast: 50-60 miles per day, so I found the books leisurely pace with some days 35-45 miles attractive.Some of the expository crap between the directional information seemed copy and pasted from local tourism boards (acted as filler).He lightly glazed over (or didn’t even mention) describing very rough or unpaved patches in the road: before Trinidad, on bicycle trials in Fort Bragg, and 2/3 in on the ride to Standish-Hickey Recreation area at Benbow Rd where you pop onto some intense washed out bits; if you are strictly riding road tires it’s best just to avoid these areas and stay on 101 but he’ll never mention that this might be a desirable option.His recommendation that single women avoid the doing the tour alone in the introduction strikes me as a bit misogynistic and odd as I saw 5 different grown women riding alone on my trip this summer.I feel like the book's audience is older, perhaps early or nearing retirement weekend rider wanting to tackle their first tour. I wish I would’ve got this book from the library instead or buying it outright, not just because I was only using parts of it but because the content I used didn’t add much to the enjoyment of my tour.

I am a huge fan of Thorness' other book, Biking the Puget Sound. I use it all summer long!This book is very inspiring for longer bike adventures. I don't know that I will ever bike the whole Pacific Coast, but the book breaks the whole route into manageable segments so you could plan to do portions of it as your schedule allows. The book includes practical advice on packing, equipment, meals and lodging. The routes are not all about getting from point a to point b, but they include side trips and stops to see local art and culture which is what I love about these guides!I also love to bike in any city I visit and the book includes 25-35 mile city tours of each of the major cities on the west coast, I'll definitely use those.

The truth?I'm not even a cyclist and I thoroughly enjoyed this work by Bill Thorness. Detailing the travels (via bike) on the Pacific Coast route, Thorness incorporates detailed mileage logs with vivid descriptions of sights and history along each segment.For those embarking on this ride - this book would be a must have!

Bill is the only guide you'll ever need to cycling the Pacific coast, whether you're barreling straight through from Canada to Mexico or taking trips piecemeal anywhere along the way. His research is thorough, his directions clear and concise, and his observations highly detailed about everything from terrain to taking rest stops for a meal or overnight. But the best part is his lively and witty prose which is a delight to absorb even if you're journeying from the comfort of your Laz-E-Boy. A great guide book and an entertaining read that conveys practicality and a sense of adventure in equal measure. Essential!

As soon as I received this book, I felt a chill...this book really conveys what I would expect the antarctic to be...every page has photos and takes you on a wondrous journey throughout the antarctic. My son is planning to take me there on my "big" birthday when I turn 70 years old...And I just can't wait to see in person the beauty and wonder that this book portrays of this icy area of the world. Olimpianbooks, the seller, kept their word and sent me a flawless book.

Bought as a gift for someone who is going to be traveling to Antarctica ..only issue was 2 scratches on the book jacket and also a few on the back as well otherwise a beautiful book

I purchased this book shortly before going to Antarctica and the breathtaking pictures and the very engaging narratives about the continent and the people who work and live in such a place was great preparation for such a journey.

Although this is a "coffee table" style book, and the pictures are excellent, its stated goal was to review the interaction of humans with Antarctica, and it does this exceedingly well. Ms. Myers insights and her expressions of the feelings of being on this beautiful continent are excellent. Study the photos well, but read the text thoroughly. By all means, get this book if you have any interest in Antarctica.

Antarctica was my dream trip and in preparation I bought, read and enjoyed the pictures in several book. This book is a treasure and the photos are simply awesome. Now that I have been to the continent, I can say that no photograph does this continent justice. It is just too magnificent. If you buy this book, you will enjoy it.

I bought this book for my son, who was traveling to Antarctica for his work. He said it was a wonderful book with lots of beautiful pictures.

Went down to antarctica for work, nice to see this before I went. Some interesting facts, and boring information, but that's how you sell a nice coffee table book. This book could hold it's own if it were 5 pages though. Still, interesting.

Even with the release of Oracle 18C, this book is still valuable. My main concern with this book is that it gives the wrong impression about Oracle Database Tuning. This should not be the first book for someone learning about Oracle Database Tuning.The features discussed in this book are still in Oracle 18C. This book covers most of the performance tuning options available. With the coverage of the X$ views, this book is of value to the advanced performance tuner.My problem with the book is that it gives the impression that adjusting database parameters can fix performance problems. This is the last thing one should be doing. Unfortunately, people start at the Oracle database instance because of the wealth of performance information and tools available.One tunes according to a methodology. The one I use is based on wait event analysis (see Optimizing Oracle Performance: A Practitioner's Guide to Optimizing Response Time). This approach is customer-focused: where and why are they experiencing pain, Not on why is the database instance performing badly.

Some of this book is current and excellent (worth the purchase alone). Other sections are out of date, and must have come from a previous version and no longer necessarily apply (SAME Technology written 20 years ago - think SSDs). And still other sections are just wrong (I paraphrase "DBAs that use ASM are using Automatic Memory Management" - nope not true today for any Oracle Linux database of medium or greater memory footprint - you have to use Huge Pages which is not compatible with AMM).Despite it's short comings (nothing is perfect) the shear volume of info that is applicable is well worth the price.

This book performance topics that can hardly be found together in a single book. The explanation is clear and straight forward.I wish they made it clear where to download the code script used in the book.

I have had the pleasure to work with an Oracle Evangelist like Rich when I was part of ROLTA TUSC in Lombard IL a few years ago. Lovely group with the best of the best the industry can offer. Another gem rolled out with complete coverage on 12c. I highly recommend this book.

I am a novice Ancestry researcher and have found some good information in this book to speed things along. After all research is not free and time is money.The book also has links to other websites with suggestions as to what to do with your information once you have completed your research. Other family members will no doubt be interested in what you have put together. These suggestions may help you decide into what format to compile your info and how to archive/restore old photographs to include in your manuscript. I suggest reading this book before you set up an account with Ancestry.

Author Nancy Hendrickson describes using the Ancestry.com site. The book, aimed at new researchers more than experienced ones, contains good comment, but often comes up a bit short. For example, although she cautions new users about accepting information from trees if it appears wrong, she really fails to tell them they should never add the tree as a source but instead should verify the information and add it manually after it is verified. While she is correct that uploading information from a GEDcom file is quicker, she fails to mention reasons for not doing so--and many exist. In the chapters on using AncestryDNA, she fails to mention some of the tips leading genetic genealogists suggest. For example, she tells readers to email those who do not have a tree without telling them how they may be able to find an unattached tree by checking the match's profile or how the connection may be determined by looking at "shared matches." In fact, she never mentions "shared matches." She also failed to mention and caution users about some of the weaker databases such as some of the public records collections lacking dates and some of the collections drawn from older user-submitted sources which contain errors. Of course, the author could not anticipate the problems tree sync users currently experience due to some data migration issues. She could not anticipate the problems with the Rootsweb portions of the site which resulted in long outages for some resources and continuing outages for others. Most supplemental resources suggested appear to be mostly sources from the book's publisher rather than using the "best sources" for acquiring additional subject information. Recommended only for true beginners, but with the caution to supplement with additional resources and webinars to gain a better picture of the power of Ancestry and to understand the genealogical proof standard which did not appear to be a consideration of the author. I received an electronic copy for review purposes from the publisher through NetGalley with the expectation of an honest review.

The print is too light to read, which makes it impossible for me it would be nice if the book had a better index, it would be easier to search for my questions.

We started the genealogy search this year. Received the membership as Christmas gifts. This book has made it much easier to navigate. It can get overwhelming during your search and eagerness to keep looking to find your ancestors. It’s worth the buy.

As I am a genealogist and use Ancestry a lot for research, I was very pleased with this book. It arrived as expected and was in excellent condition. Thank you.

I received the Ancestry DNA kit for Christmas, so while I was waiting for my results, I began to build my family tree. This book was an invaluable guide for me as I began building my tree and researching my ancestors. It made the process less daunting as a beginner to this whole process.

I bought this as a supplement after I did a DNA test. It was a waste of money. There are no great gems. I gave it goodwill.

This book is just nice to have on hand for a quick reference or just to learn new techniques. I hope it can keep up with Ancestry
