The book is combines a number of sources, all of them secondary. This is the book's main issue. The author, despite his claim to expertise, does not offer any primary source interviews/data.This is sad, given he seems knowledgable, but much of his secondary source data comes from an archive provided by Aymenn Jawad Al-Tamimi. Not even a word "Thank you" is in his methodology or notes describing how half of his book is built on the back of this guy's archive. It's important, given he moves through book describing how this document or that document is important to understanding the Islamic State, and yet, he says that Aymenn Jawad Al-Tamimi's archive is possibly compromised. For example, he states that (and I am paraphrasing his intro), "We don't know how Aymenn Jawad Al-Tamimi got his archive. How the source got into his hands and what happened to it." Really? If so, why did you bother using them? Other than this archive, the rest of the sources are not very unique. Many of authors have used them. It's pretty thin pickings for what I call the "ISIS Expert" crowd sitting their cubicles at universities around the world.
