Yes, the annotations of this third edition Oxford NRSV reflect a more liberal tone and do not present other perspectives for balance. For example sodomy is interpreted as sexual excess, not homosexuality. The commentary prefacing the book of Isaiah presents as factual the speculations of some that there are three Isaiah's meaning more than one author over a period of centuries. And yes, this Bible is gender inclusive; instead of using the "he" pronoun or "brother" it is switched to the universal "one" or "brothers and sisters". If you wish a more conservative approach and like the RSV word for word style the new ESV or Holman versions might be a better fit than this Oxford NRSV.I was raised on RSV and prefer that word for word translation instead of the NIV which is more conversational, but does not match the verses I memorized long ago. When Harper Collins acquired Zondervan in 2011 the 2011 edition made some significant liberal changes. When Jesus returned to his disciples after the resurrection it says, "when he returned." Returned from where it does not say. Previous editions say, "when he returned from his father" denoting Jesus' divinity. Youtube offers several video examples of theological twists in the 2011 NIV. For dating references Oxford does not use "BC" or "AD" but "BCE" and "CE".Physical features I like about this Oxford edition: the size 10 font, ample margins for notes already mentioned, two column with single column footnotes at the bottom of the page, the no bleed through papers, the best maps and index of any translation, an above average concordance, glossary includes Hebrew and Greek words, and the annotated, augmented editions have great genealogy graphs and other info.
I’ve been looking forward to the 5th edition and wow what a beautiful Bible to study and learn from. The leather bound is soft and supple. It’s easy to read. The font is easy for me to read. Can’t wait to learn the latest discoveries and knowledge from those who dedicated their life in this field of study.
I love my Bible, but the print is getting so hard to read even with glassed.So i bought the same Bible I have had for 30 years because one customers remarks of how much larger the print was on this bible.Well what a surprise Mine is exactly the same and I opened the new Bible to a random page and the same page on my Bible had the exact script on it. So no difference at all so I am a little disappointed. I want that exact same Bible with larger text.
I purchased the genuine leather edition. The quality of the leather, binding, and paper give this Bible a wonderful feel. The annotations, articles, charts, etc. are extremely informative and well researched. Be aware that some of the information is liberal in nature, but everything in the annotations is material that every Christian should be aware of. This Bible would have been worth every penny of the suggested retail price. At less than half that it was an almost unbelievable buy on Amazon.
Good quality and the annotations are really professional. I use it to prepare my prayer everyday.
Although I own several Bibles, the only two I actually use very much are a lovely Cambridge KJV leather Bible with large print (I think it criminal how tiny they make the print on some Bibles) and this New Oxford Annotated. Different religious traditions tend to encourage the use of various translations, but if you go to any mainstream seminary or divinity school, this is far and away the most widely used edition of the Bible. And for good reason. All things considered the New Revised Standard Version is probably the most highly regarded translation in English today.What makes this edition so helpful, apart from the fine translation, is the wealth of student aids that it contains. There are a number of brief articles introducing the various parts of the Bible as well as a large number of footnotes that enhance one's understanding of the passages. There is also a brief concordance and fourteen extremely good maps. Since this is intended as an ecumenical Bible, it includes the Apocrypha.I am not a masochist. I therefore avoid books, whether religious or otherwise, that place much of a strain on my eyes. Many Bibles simply strike me as instruments of torture, with minute, tiny print, and paper that is so thin the print on the backing page bleeds through, causing eyestrain. But the print on this Bible is not only a good size but a very easy on the eye font, while the paper both minimized glare and bleeding. It is also sturdily bound.For all these reasons, I can't imagine a better study Bible than this one. In fact, if I could own only one Bible, this would be the one I would choose. Luckily, I don't have to own only one, so I don't have to give up my KJV. But I do encourage any serious student of the Bible to own a copy of this very fine edition.
Not for the average person who finds the Gideon Bible sufficient, especially without opening it. The King James version -no, the King did not translate the work himself- is considered a landmark in the history of the English language, this annotated edition provides remarkable historical documentation and contextual reading of biblical writings; the scholarship may be of interest to those who like to locate Jericho on a map.
I ordered this for a Bible as Literature class and the footnotes were super helpful! They explained any cross-cultural contexts that otherwise may have been confusing.
