This is a wonderful series and I love this wonderfully illustrated story of Van Gogh's time in Arles, France. The story tells of him moving in to the "yellow house" and being inspired by the colors in southern France. There are many easily recognizable works by Van Gogh in this story. But it also talks about how the town's people felt that Vincent and his paintings didn't fit in with their town. At one point in the story, the kids throw rocks at Vincent and his friend Camille. Camille's father does explain to Camille that "people often laugh at things that are different, but I've got a feeling that one day they will learn to love Vincent's paintings." Eventually Vincent is forced to leave the town but he gives Camille one of his paintings of the sunflowers. *** My caution does not come from the story itself but a book note that is printed on the last page of the story (not even on a book jacket that you can take off and put away). It explains how Vincent later becomes depressed and cuts off one of his ears. It also explains that even after seeking the help of a doctor that he commits suicide by shooting himself with a pistol. This is a tough fact for me to reconcile sharing with the age group that this book is intended for. You of course can choose not to read it to your child (or children if sharing with a class), however any curious early reader is sure to take notice of this information since it is simply printed on the last illustrated page of the story. Just be prepared and have an explanation for this information if you don't have the chance to censor the last page of the book.

If you are an elementary school art teacher, you NEED this book in your classroom library. Great story about Vincent Van Gogh that shows his struggles in life but with a good moral lesson. The illustrations as awesome and incorporate so much of Van Gogh's personal work. It mentions "Starry Night" but the main focus is on his "Sunflowers" painting. My kids love this book and I'm happy to finally have my own copy!

I was looking for books about painters to add to our library's collection. I picked this one, as well as another one from the same author, with the title "Van Gogh and the Sunflowers". The covers are different, the titles are different, so I was really surprised and upset when I realized that they were actually the same books, same illustrations, same texts, but only two different titles. It is really not nice to trick the client like this.Apart from this, it is a very nice book.

Our 5 year old granddaughter is an artist <3 We have purchased 3 of this series and after reading each one -she ran over to the table and began painting/drawing... inspiring to learn of the artist's life and character as well as how (especially Van Gough) they were not appreciated initially. It is especially cool that the artist's work is background on every page!

Nothing wrong with this book, but beware that it is the SAME book as "Camille and the Sunflowers." Different title, different cover, but SAME book. I ordered both thinking they were different books.

This simple little fictional story is a lovely way to introduce young children to the wonderful world of art. I like that the author has inserted a child into the story to interact with the artist. The illustrations are colorful and inviting. My 5 year old granddaughter loves Vincent Van Gogh and wanted a book about him. This book has been a gentle way to introduce her to an artist, who struggled to be accepted in life, and ultimately conquered with his art. The book showcases a few of Van Gogh's masterpieces (photographs) inserted along throughout the storyline. I liked this book so much I have ordered additional books by this author, about other artists.

Loooooved it!!! My 7 year old niece was captivated and I was inspired by this simple and sweet telling of Van Gogh’s melancholy life. It made his not particularly interesting room paintings take on a whole new meaning. We are inspired to go see his museum now. Well done Laurence Anholt!

You feel a great deal of sympathy for this artist after reading this book - miss-understood, under-appreciated, and alone, you can see why his life and art tended to be rather depressing, although this story doesn't really dwell on tragedy. It is a fantastic introduction for a child to the man behind the art.The illustrations, although never pretending to re-create the actual paintings van Gogh was so famous for, several times presented landscapes or backgrounds that those familiar with his art would recognize. I thought that was a nice touch and might spark some additional interest in children if a parent/teacher points it out to them (or they discover it on their own).I'll be checking out more of this series!

An Unkindness of Ghost is everything I hope for in science fiction. Solomon thoughtfully creates a world in which they explore issues of sexual identity, race, class, and historical trauma. At a time when the world seems to be crumbling on all sides I found myself drawing strength from Aster and Giselle who are driven to challenge official narratives and seek change. I recommend this book to anyone who loves science fiction or wants a new and challenging approach to thinking about social justice.

This is probably one of my favorite books I've read in the last year. An interesting and thoughtful take on not just the functioning scientifically, but socially, of a generation ship, and an in-depth treatment of race and discrimination in a genre that often hand-waves our species' history of it away.This is one of the first science fiction books in a long time where I saw myself in the protagonist. I was told going in that there were queer characters and that the main characters were black, but I was pleasantly surprised by a recognizably autistic protagonist. Often when people write about characters with difficulty recognizing their emotions, it feels false to me, but this felt very familiar to me.An Unkindness of Ghosts is interesting, and emotional, and clever, and although it's a hard read (the ship is basically Plantations In Space and Rivers Solomon does not shy away from the horrible aspects of that) it is very much worth it. It's satisfying and rewarding, even if it's not comfortable.

I struggled between a 3 and a 4 star rating. Aster, the main protagonist, is a character I would enjoy reading again. The idea of a generation ship roaming the galaxy without a sure destination as the set up for a plantation narrative drives home the hopelessness and claustrophobia of slavery/ethnic caste systems.The reasons I ultimately settled with a 3 star rating are as follows:P.O.V. switches: several times we move into the P.O.V. of other characters. Solomon writes these characters' voices well, but I felt like the switch in P.O.V. allowed an unwelcomed reprieve from Aster's conflicts.Temporal shifts: along with the change in P.O.V. there were flashbacks(?) to a younger Aster with a younger Giselle, but the transition into the flashback didn't signal to me I was in the past, so I spent several moments wondering what happened to the almost-detective story I was reading.I would recommend this to folks who like a hard sci-fi backdrop for their dystopian narratives. I would also recommend this to folka interested in a diverse cast, or want a narrative which doesn't shirk away from the horror of race-based caste systems which are perpetuated across human civilization.

A compelling debut. Speculative fiction with a literary, feminist edge, set in the distant future aboard a spacecraft tumbling, unmoored (physically and spiritually) through space.It's a stratified, segregated world on this space ship, ruled by a Sovereign with absolute power and cruelty. The story, however, is Astrid's --a Low worker, black-skinned, who is also a healer, the favorite of the Chief Surgeon, The. Astrid is, a powerful female character in a novel in which almost all the women characters, even Astrid's lost mother, Luna, are strong and strongly told. However, it is Theo I found most intriguing: devout, marked as effeminate by the Sovereign, with a secret past, yearning to do good, especially by Astrid but full of fear. I must admit: the middle of the novel plodded along, but Astrid's vivid remembrances of folk tales about animals, the Raven, stand out, and the story carried me through to the riveting, explosive end of this novel. Kudos! I look forward to reading more from Rivers Solomon.

As I age, it's more and more rare that a book so enraptures me so completely that I tear through it in a single sitting. An Unkindness of Ghosts is one of these rarities. The narrative feels fresh, and the characters are just breath-taking. There are no one-dimensional characters written here, and getting to know these characters is reason enough to read the book. Once you do read it, you'll find many others. As a scientist, I love all of the women of color scientists that I too rarely get to see in media. The story unabashedly confronts the brutality, trauma, and abuse humanity is capable of, in particular that white folks have proven ourselves to be capable of throughout history. The characters are irreparably marked by this oppressive brutality in a variety of ways while still managing to collaboratively cobble together moments of joy, revenge, and fulfillment. If you're looking for sci-fi with a fresh perspective or for an impeccably written narrative with impossibly compelling characters, pick this up.

My dear fellow readers: I’ve read quite a few books this year (as have we all), many of which I truly loved. But I have to say that this one is beyond question, my most favorite book of 2017.It is one of those rare finds that pulls you in—body and soul—after a mere page or two. Aster was magnificent as the protagonist. Such an odd character, but one I couldn’t help but love.The story takes place on a giant spaceship, one that’s been traveling for about 1,000 years. Solomon brilliantly used this ship as a microcosm for greater society. She expertly spoke volumes about human nature, gender, the stratification of people by economic status.

I just got started with learning how to crochet in the past year and have been enjoying it immensely. I had considered actually making some holiday gifts and even some things that I could wear for winter, yet was lacking in ideas and patterns - until now. Author White Lemon's "365 Days of Crochet" has a wonderful collection of simple patterns for crochet projects. There are patterns for things such as baby blankets, hats, purses, plant hangers, ornaments, belts, and much more. Each pattern is very well explained with regards to materials needed and directions. This one will keep me busy for a long time to come.

I wasn't expecting much for $0.99 but there were lots of 5 stars so I took a chance. Big mistake! Very disappointed with the book. The pictures are links as an appendix but most of the links don't work! The instructions seem too vague to follow accurately without pictures. I have been crocheting since I was very young and can figure out most patterns but these patterns are not written well nor is there consistency between one pattern to the next. It seems like someone just copied and pasted random patterns and placed them in a book. No indication of difficulty level nor approximate time for completion. No accurate indication of how much yarn is need for some patterns it just states "small" or "scrap" or other vague amounts. No gauges either like "12 sc is 2 inches" or finished sizes.

No doubt the price is great for so many patterns, however, not a single photo of any items. Even if it only a black and white photo it would be a great help. I would have given it all 5 stars if it had photos.

The patterns in this book are quick and easy. Well written and consistent throughout. I gave it 4 stars because I am a visual person and there are no pictures with the actual pattern. There are picture references at the very end, but you have to look each one up separately and some of the links don't work.

Seriously, every pattern in this book are patterns that you can find for free online. The layout is hard to deal with and there are no pictures to see what I'm trying to make. Granted, they do give you links in the back of the book to each project, but over half of the ones given don't work and some aren't even given. I am highly disappointed.

Great projects of varying difficulty. Some projects can be done in a day while others are longer. No photos or charts - only written instructions which are sometimes not totally clear. If you are an intermediate to expert crocheter that should not be a problem. If you are a beginner, there are still plenty of projects that can be completed easily and successfully.

pointless book if you don't get to see at least a picture here and there. the table of contents is the days of the year not even the name of the projects. not worth 99 cents or the space it took on my kindle

I should have known when I saw an 8-photo cover, on a book for 365+ projects, and only 2 photos pictured actual crocheting, none of which was a finished crocheted piece. None of these projects are pictured. To determine if you want to make a project, you must read the pattern, and put it together in your head, visualizing it in your head, to see how it looks. Not easy.

No photos for any of the patterns. I have been crocheting for many years and I thought what a great idea for quick projects that I could do in the car while my husband drove. Downloaded it on to my kindle but no photos of any kind no indication of what a project would look like when finished. At the end of the book there is a list of places to go on the internet to see photos but they did not work for the projects I was looking for. The first link I tried just took me to free patterns on pinterest. I would need an internet connection to look up any pattern and the whole point was to have a project I could work on away from home and computer. The book might be great but from the kindle addition I would never know!

I bought this book as soon as I read a review about it in "The Writer" Magazine (Dec 09, pg 44, by Amy Wallen).In an irony to the subject, flash fiction, the introduction of this field guide is the longest chapter in the entire book, weighing-in at 26 pages. Despite its length, Ms. Misah provides the reader with an interesting history of flash fiction.I found the essays within this guidebook to be useful and informative. Each essay ranged from 3-9 pages, which included a writing prompt and an example of flash fiction. As you could expect, the authors had some differences of opinion on what makes an effective short-short story. What they did agree on, was that each story should be thought-provoking and leave the reader with an indelible image.I found most of the story examples, "thought provoking" alright. My usual responses were, "huh?" or even, "What was that all about?"I guess I'm not the literary type. I'm not into deciphering an author's meaning and images in his or her story.My favorite was "Inside Job" by Pamela Painter. In this flash--(warning! Plot spoiler ahead!)--a university couple are attending a party. After noticing her husband hit on another one of his graduate students, Marla goes into the kitchen to grab a drink, but accidently douses her blouse with seltzer water. One of Marla's graduate students tries to help dab off the water and she guides his hand--underneath her blouse.Whew!Talk about an "indelible image!"I rate this book a solid four stars. This is more out of personal bias. With the exception of "Inside Job," it's hard for me to get excited over a how-to book. However, for anyone interested in writing flash fiction, or improving their craft in this niche-genre, this is an invaluable guide.

I've got this book as well as the Rose Metal Field Guide to Flash Non-Fiction and I love them both. They both follow the same format, an essay on writing followed by a prompt or exercise and an example piece. The included examples are themselves almost worth the price of admission. The reading list at the back is wonderful as well and can take you further. Highly recommended if Flash Fiction is your area of interest!

One chapter on Titles is poorly written, but the introduction is great and several chapters are very strong. I like how they have sample stories after each chapter, and the flash activities each chapter offers would work well in a class or for a group of writers meeting together, or even on your own if you don't have a group.

This collection of 25 essays from experts in the flash fiction field, is an excellent introduction to flash fiction for those new to the genre and a great guide for established writers. Each essay explores a different facet of the flash fiction genre from length, to form, to editing. In addition to the essays, most of the contributors also include exercises and examples which I find very useful. An excellent guide to writing flash fiction that should be read by anyone interested in the genre.

I had bought The Ultimate Guide to Chakras: The Beginner's Guide by the same author and recently found out that she had a new book, The Chakras Handbook, coming out. I pre-ordered it thinking that there would be new content on balancing each chakra. Sadly, I received it today and discovered it's the exact same book except the font is even smaller. If you have trouble with eyesight, the font is small in both books but, at least, the first book has some larger font. I'm really disappointed that the title and cover were changed to make it appear to be a completely separate book vs a second edition.

Beautiful product, but disappointed there was no warning about this book being the EXACT same content that is in another Chakra book by Athena. It’s just more condensed here. Both books have different titles and sub titles but both have the exact same content word for word. I thought I was buying something different, or a nice companion along with the other book. I was wrong.

I had pre-ordered this book. Actually, I had pre-ordered all of Athena's books, and I'll never do that again. This book (as another reviewer showed with pictures) is the same as her other larger paperback book that was published earlier). So I basically spent more dinero for a book that I already have. Additionally, her other book had print that was too small (which I had called her store to mention; hoping future publications would take that into consideration), and this book doees too. There is a lot of space that could have warrented larger font, but that didn't happen. I normally enjoy reading books, and using them for reference. I don't enjoy these books that I have because of the small font. Sad; indeed. Not sure if I'll purchase any more of the author's books, since I'm disappointed with the duplication of these two. Additionally, when her first book was published, she promoted it before publication that pre-orders would receive a special 'thank you'. I know several people, including myself, that solely received the book.It's a shame because the author does have a lot of knowledge to share, but these details (the small font and duplicate information) are definite negatives contributing to my review.

The print is so small, I had to use a magnifying glass just to read it, since I don't have the cheaters glasses.Just not worth it.

I received a copy of this book for a fair and honest review. I have read a few books like this and few come close to this one. I love how the book is set up. That you get journal exercises and all the crystal information. The illustrations were nice and it was easy to follow and that is what made the use of this book fun and enjoyable. I enjoyed that each chakra had its own chapter and that made it easy to focus on each one and give its own spiritual justice.Â

Awesome. Amazon making it simple to find the books I needed for school.

Very bland.

Horrible book. Explanations are horrible and you have to figure it out by yourself. Terrible book. Good luck if it’s assigned.

The kindle edition is missing pages at the end. This is not a complete copy.

I purchased this book a week before school started so that it would be available and I would get the best price. They ended up sending me the wrong book, instead of this I got a book on Microsoft Windows 10! When I went to report it, they told me that since it was an outside seller even though Amazon Warehouse Supplied it, they could not send me the book anymore for the price I paid I would have to purchase the rental again! At a $60 price jump compared to the $20 I paid. So upset, this is the third issue I have had with Amazon rentals so far. Considering switching to Chegg for good, especially since they have the book for only $19.
