Amazing reference. Filled with useful tidbits. Both excellent as a indepth guide and as thorough reference guide. My go to guide, for reading differentiation. Updated on the lastest research into orthographic mapping. The book provides indepth overviews of the most effective reading pedagogy out there and the article resources are superb. The biggest downside of the price is steeper than I would like, and all too often falls outside most teachers budget and the reason for my 1 star deduction.Wiley publishing could you please consider decreasing the cost of this book? Teacher salaries do not allow for such extravagant prices and our children could really stand to benefit from having more evidence based practice in there classrooms. There was a lot of information to digest in this book, as the author explained many, many studies of reading. I thought his treatment of Orton-Gillingham methods for dyslexia was rather cavalier. In order to get his specifics for prevention/intervention, one needs to buy the follow-up book, Equipped for Reading Success. There is a link in this book to a couple of chapters of Equipped for Reading Success, and free access to his PAST screening test, so that's nice. If you want the background on the research, this is a good book for that. If you want the prevention/intervention plans, buy the other book, which also has a couple of chapters about his conclusion that advanced phonemic awareness is the key for many kinds of struggling readers.

I have worked as a school psychologist for almost two decades and this book completely changed the way I looked at my assessments and the information I provide to teachers and parents regarding their struggling readers. I highly recommend this book.

Wonderful, authoritative book on reading. It is very up to date, cites reputable research from entities not involved in selling curricular materials, and leads to an important understanding about how young children should be taught literacy. We could minimize the number of children who have reading problems ... we just need to rely on good evidence. We examine food labels carefully before we purchase the product, why not pay the same attention to the instructional materials schools choose for K-2 students?

This is the book to read if you want to understand reading research without having to pour through thousands of research articles. Due to my job as a reading interventionist at a rural school, I am not familiar with all of the various tests reviewed in the book, but I expect that an educational psychologist likely has access to them and would benefit from the comparisons offered. While this is a research-heavy book, I found myself highlighting information that I could apply practically in the classroom by tweaking programs I'm already using in the classroom. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am inspired to be a better teacher because of it.

This book completely changed my understanding of the reading process, and how words become instantly recognized "sight words." I had an AHA moment every few pages. Should be required reading for every School Psychologist. I have read this book so many times I could quote it in my sleep, and every time I learn something new. Dr Kilpatrick writes in a clear and straightforward manner which means his practical explanations are accessible to professional and layperson alike.

So glad I bought this book to help me in my practice as a school psychologist. It has helped to answer questions about "why" some people struggle in reading and "how" to diagnose and intervene in order to get them reading. It does require effort on the readers part to understand the terminology/processes being discussed; however, the author does a good job of giving definitions/examples. I've already recommended this book to several of my colleagues!

Outstanding Resource for Serious Reading Instructors, Tutors, Specialists, Coaches, etc. More resources are provided for free online at Wiley. I read it slowly and carefully. The information is based on current research. Results show how to improve students' reading skills and scores by 26+ points. This is a tremendous improvement!

Just amazing, another eye opener about how great a country America is. This book rightly points out Americaphobia, the raging hatred of America being pandered on college campuses, the faux racial outcry by lefties and host of other race hustlers, the likes of Coates and Cornel West. As an immigrant to this country I find it quite troubling that so many people support the open hatred and demonization of the greatest nation on earth for anyone to live. Your lineage does not dictate your level of success, you do! Thanks, Jason D. Hill, your powerful arguments will convince many.

This is a magic book. Highest recommendation. If you want to know who we are, at our best, through the eyes of a brilliant scholar and immigrant, read this book and smile and laugh through tears of pride. In my opinion, James D. Hill has written a masterpiece that should be required reading in our high schools, and for those coming to this country as immigrants. It weaves his personal story, with his in depth philosophical and political belief system, explaining in detail, why a man who could have easily joined any number of "victim" tribes to demand special status, instead decided to make a compact with America, to find his own way in this great country. Learning and living with struggle, he never seems to have lost sight of the fact that the life he was building, could not be built in any other country. His love of the country for providing that is obvious, and his story renewed my love of this country, and opened my eyes to things I have taken for granted for a long time.In the pages of this heartfelt letter to his country, this professor leaves no doubt that he believes the current university academic system is in need of overhaul because it has become overrun by tenured Marxist academics who teach hate for everything good about America. We stand to lose all that is good about America if we let them continue to subject our children to their lies. God bless Jason D. Hill, and God help us return our institutions of higher learning to the control of rational human beings..

Lyrical and passionate, personal and frequently moving, Jason Hill's WE HAVE OVERCOME is a love letter to his country and a plea for reason, an exhortation that we preserve the character and values of this country. As a Ph.D. in American Literature who taught in colleges and universities in this country over the past forty years, I can attest to the accuracy of Jason Hill's descriptions of our institutions of higher learning as indoctrination centers filling the minds of young people with alt-left views of America as an "illegitimate, counterfeit country." In his memoir, We Have Overcome, Dr. Hill--as patriots Thomas Paine and J. Hector St. John de Crevecoeur before him--seeks to establish the truth of America as the first "nontribal" place in the world, where one has the freedom to create one's conception of the good life for oneself. If slavery was a "birth defect" of our country, we have always been on a "path toward self-reflective improvement." Dr. Hill's book effectively counters alt-left political arguments, and clearly, he is not afraid to do so. While he himself is a professor at a top public research university, he believes that "the chase for respectability at the betrayal of your own conscience leaves us all in the end unmoored to our our deepest core values." Like Emerson and Thoreau, he believes in the power of the individual to effect change. The change Dr. Hill seeks to effect is a return by all to an enlightened and accurate view of America as the last great hope for the world BECAUSE of her embrace of "reason, capitalism, individualism, and self-reliance." Dr. Hill has a gift for relating complex ideas in clear, simple language. His arguments are thus easy to comprehend and forceful in their reason. At the same time, his memoir is intensely personal, full of lyrical passages and heart rending moments. This book sits squarely in today's political discourse; it is a courageous and captivating testament to the greatness of America and the struggle of one born outside this country to fulfill his dream, the American Dream.I could not put the book down and read it in one sitting.

Richard Gallagher, PhD, is Associate Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and of Psychiatry at New York University (NYU) Langone Medical Center. He is also Director of Special Projects at the Institute for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity and Behavior Disorders at the Child Study Center of Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital of New York at NYU Langone. Dr. Gallagher is a clinical psychologist and neuropsychologist who has been treating and evaluating children since the 1980s. He is coauthor of Organizational Skills Training for Children with ADHD: An Empirically Supported Treatment (for mental health professionals) and The Organized Child: An Effective Program to Maximize Your Kid's Potential--in School and in Life (for parents). Dr. Gallagher codeveloped (with Howard B. Abikoff) the Organizational Skills Training Program and codirected the research that serves as the basis for both books.   Howard B. Abikoff, PhD, is Professor Emeritus of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at New York University (NYU) Langone Medical Center. Previously, he was the Pevaroff Cohn Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Professor of Psychiatry at NYU and Director of the Institute for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity and Behavior Disorders at the Child Study Center of Hassenfeld Children's Hospital of new York at NYU Langone. This book is definitely an insightful way to contemplate and illuminate the series, leading one directly into the Grimm Brothers folklore as well as, in the process, into some other selected Grimm-Brothers-unrelated mythologies.Certainly hooks up the reader to the show and to the books of fairy tales on the shelf. The author explores possibilities, retells (with some humor) the tales, simplifies, translates, and intentionally makes the complex material/symbolism/allusions easily digestible by anyone without any memory/knowledge of fairy tales, as this is (unfortunately) the current situation with so many younger readers and fans of the show. However, if someone is interested in delving a bit deeper into a more scholarly approach to the Grimm Brothers, it might be a good idea to read more academic (while still enjoyable and highly unsettling) works by Maria Tatar (scholarship in Germanic literature)--especially her excellent book titled The Hard Facts of the Grimms' Fairy Tales (the title says it all!).

I'm a huge fan of Grimm and wanted something that would explain the different creatures more thorough. I thought the book would have lots of pictures. I wanted to see illustrations of the creatures and weapons. I should of read the reviews before buying the book. There aren't any illustrations, however the author definitely did his research on the show and especially the weapons in Aunt Marie's trailer. It was difficult for me to follow all the names and descriptions without any pics to go along. I was very impressed by the authors knowledge of everything Grimm.

Being a lover of Grimm as well as a lover of folklore and fairytales, this was great! The retelling of the stories with the author's comments had me chuckling more times than not. Quotes from the series gave me mini-flashes of the story and the creatures involved in them. I would highly recommend this book for any Grimm lover and anyone who enjoys fairytales as well.Con

First, the book is not only informative, but has humor, background information and lots of great comparisons to fairy tales we heard as children. It may not be endorsed by the t.v. show, but I would recommend it to all the Grimmsters out there!! Love reading the quotes from the characters in the show.

Not what I expected, it was better. Too bad that it stops at the end of season two. Can we hope for a follow up for the remainder of the series?

This book not only addresses the Vessen in Grimm but also the Grimm bros fairy tales and other fairy tales that the Vessen were based on. There are a lot of quotes from the characters of Grimm, esp. Monroe...Who I adore!

I am interested in Computer Programming and my friend recommended me this guide. This book is an introduction to programming language concepts and key programming languages being used todays. While the first few chapters focus on programming concepts and on building a foundation for writing, executing and using programs for personal use, the rest of the book presents a dedicated chapter on the programming languages- Java, JavaScript, C, Python, SQL, HTML, and CSS. I found this book very informative and useful. It is described in the simple language and easy to understand. Inside this book, I found much important information on all my questions. I liked this guide and would recommend it to beginners who are interested in programming languages.

If your household help doesn’t understand English, this social program will fail. The language that it recognizes is the computer programming language, and the set of instructions written in that language and given to the computer to perform a specific task is merely a computer program. Computer programs are the heart and soul of a machine. The hardware is just a dead body unless you have active computer programs running on the system — however this guide for a beginner.
