Ah, John Gottman. Such wonderful research, such terrible titles.Anyway, I already had to return this book to the library so I can only give you my impressions-- as my sister says, "the spaghetti that's stuck to the wall." So here goes:Interactions involve people making "bids" for attention, affection, connection. When we respond successfully to others' bids, we are able to make strong and resilient relationships at home, work, school.When someone makes a bid, you can respond either by turning toward the bid and making that connection, or by turning away from the bid by ignoring it, or by turning against it by turning it into a chance to fight.So simple, right? Like Gottman's other books, the simple information is challenging to assimilate. I had to look at myself and realize how much turning away I do. And although I felt a little like an evil psychological mastermind, when I intentionally made bids and responded by turning toward bids at work-- wow. The sense of camaraderie and connection was palpable within a day or two.So although reading Gottman's wonderfully empirical research can be uncomfortable, his suggestions for successful relationships are marvelously applicable.

really insightful and helpful. This is the third book by Gottman that I have purchased so I was suspicious that it would be a lot of the same material re-worked. It was not! I really appreciate that, unlike most marriage books, the insight is useful for all relationships. I'm only 3 chapters in and it has already been helpful in identifying how I am making 'bids' and how to improve them as well​ as my response to my spouse and children.

This book should be required reading in HS. It can apply to every relationship -not just marriages. I'm even recognizing my dog's emotional "bids" now. I'm so thankful to have read this while my daughter is still a toddler. It can apply to the workplace, parenting, friendships, marriage etc. Great info and a quick read. Read it in two nights.

Thoughtful and insightful. I felt a little psychotic reading it, seeing as you are breaking down human conversation, and your responses to conversation (much of the time while reading) but overall it was very helpful and I learned a great deal. I can already see a difference in how I interact with others and how they respond to me. A must read for someone that is having difficulty connecting with others and are not sure why, or do not have any idea about what to do about it.

Will help your relationships even if your significant other does not read it! Why do I know this? Because the only person you can change is yourself. When you decide to change and if you decide to use the techniques in this book to do so then your relationships have no other choice but to change.... for the better if that is your goal. iI was absolutely blown away by the accuracy of this book and its uses. I found out so many things about my relationship with my husband. I knew it was bad .. but I had no idea how bad or how to fix it. This book gave me exact step by step instructions if you will, to apply into my daily life. . While he or she may be the problem. I can assure you that whatever you are doing as a result of it is most likely not making it better or you wouldn't be looking for this type of book. This takes Dr. Phil's (Oprah Winfrey's friend on tv) advice much further and gives you not only the reasons but the conversations you can have and the things you need to know about each other for change to take place. A true must for couples looking to get married, or recently did get married, or have been married and are looking for the door. Even you happy folks can gain by the knowledge that your doing things right by the book so you don't need to be worried.I have been making changes everyday which are affecting all the people I deal with for the better, even though for me I KNEW he was and still is the problem. LOL!Cream of the crop of relationship books and for the past 20 years, I thought that I had read them all .. This book is better than all of those put together!! Not a quick or fast read. It is more of a study book and a life guide book.

This is a wonderful book that has so many applications to relationships in your life. My husband and I are reading it together and we enjoy talking about the chapters and taking the questionnaires together. Yet it is also worthy of impacting relationships other than the intimate husband/wife one. Lessons from this book can benefit your interactions with your parents, children, friends, and even co-workers.

Awesome book! Not a fan of the name, but only because this is an important read for anyone wanting to consider any relationship in their life, be it employee/employer, siblings, parent/child, lovers, etc. Was a good follow up to Blink by Malcolm Gladwell!

As the title states, my therapist recommended this book to me after helping me realize how much I struggle with developing interpersonal relationships. The idea of bids for communication hit hard and I realized some of the things I did to drive potential friends, colleagues, and romantic partners away. There are a whole host of exercises and activities to perform in this book and while I did not do them I do believe they could help people, specifically people in a romantic relationship.

I have read the book on the Olmecs & find it great. I have visited the Olmec museum in Villahermosa x2 & find it all very interesting. I am planning to write a novel based on Olmec history & this book has provided some interesting insights on Olmec history. I have not read the rest of the series yet but will review them later when I am finished. This is not a book for students of Olmec history but is a good introduction to the civilization for those just beginning a study or the casual reader. Enjoy

Such an incredible read from Captivating History. This covers the main Mesoamerican civilizations .Lot of study to be done on the Olmec & Zapotec cultures. Much is known of the Aztec & Mayan Civilizations. The one thing to be aware of is the writings of the Spanish conquistadors. Naturally, they would be biased so how much is truthful will be left for historians to decide.What’s so amazing to me is just how these people just came out of the jungle & flourished for a certain time & then vanished back into the jungles . Very advanced cultures who took over other tribes who would then become allies of the Spanish . So there really is no know number of the minor tribes. But, all seemed to come crashing down when the Spanish arrived. Then what was left of these tribes became a footnote in history.The reference section is awesome which leads to further research if one so desires.

What you have here is a series of four books covering pretty much the same area but over a long period of time. Different cultures arose with their own religions, rulers, wars, everyday life and so forth and, eventually, their own downfall.There are a wide variety of relevant topics covered for each civilization, giving the reader a good overview of just what made up the particular groups and how they were similar and, at times, different from the other groups.What is important is that the books are not just filled with information but that information is presented in a manner which is easy to understand.I think it would very interesting if, someday, someone would write a book explanation just why there is such a major difference between these cultures and the Native American cultures. All supposedly are derived from early peoples who crossed over into the Americas from Siberia yet there is very little similarity between the Native Americans and the Mayans, etc. I like it when books like those in this series cause questions to arise about the why of things.

Like many Americans, I sadly was only taught about the Mayans and the Aztecs. This book included two more of the indigenous ancient civilizations of Mexico, the Olmecs and the Zapotecs. It was fascinating to read about these two civilizations that I never knew existed. This author always makes history fun and engaging and easy to learn and absorb. This is a very good read for anyone interested in history, archeology, ancient linguistics, all kinds of things. Highly recommended!!

Although it contains useful (but commonly known) information, the bullying approach just turned me off.Don't get me wrong, I cuss like a sailor and so does my husband. I worked in L.A. theatre and he was in Vietnam during the war. So foul language is not a problem. It's the arrogant, entitled Gen X approach I just can't stand. Use profanity if you want, but don't insult people with it. Yes, it's expressive;but in this case it's just used for shock value and to humiliate and guilt bait people who obviously want to relive abusive childhood or other relationship experiences. I don't. I'd slap the author if she spoke to me the way she writes.I've been a vegan for forty-seven years. I eat a marginally-decent diet of less than a thousand calories a day. I've had my diet gone over by two nutritionists, seen an Ayeurvedic doctor, had my hormones tests, my thyroid check, and been examined for diabetes. The only "reason" anyone can come up with for this first weight gain of my life (I'm sixty-six) is that I'm "getting older," and that after dancing for over fifty years, I"m orthopedically trashed and, therefore, have become sedentary.But back to the abusive nature of this book and it's popularity. I don't get it. I showed my daughter, who is a psychologist, several pages, and Angie was horrified. Angie cusses, too. But never around patients, especially someone with low self-esteem from something like weight issues. Angie said this book could drive a fragile person to suicide. And I can absolutely see how it could. Would you train a puppy by laughing at its problems and screaming "Bad! Bad! Bad!" all the time? If so, you'd have a terrified, cowering-but-well-behaved dog -- there's one next door to me.Don't pay someone for bullying you. Haven't you had enough of that in your life? I read "Mindless Eating," learned what causes us to eat, and along with all the exercise I can get my body to do, am doing much better. I bought Skinny Bitch at the insistence of a girlfriend from high school. And I'm so sorry I did.

I read this book in three days. I've tried to read a lot of health books before but they were all so boring they were difficult to read... Well not this one! The comical language and references while stating facts makes it a brilliant, interesting read. I'm starting my new "Skinny Bitch" lifestyle tomorrow and I can't wait. These authors are truly inspiring and will keep you laughing at the same time throughout the book. :-)

This book was published in 2005. Therefore, some contents are outdated such as treating saturated fat (cheese, butter, and etc.) as pure evil. But the book clearly states (in 2005) why we need carbohydrates for our health. In 2005, we were middle of low-carb diet fad. This book did not follow this ridiculous fad. This book is not for weight (muscle and fat) loss. It is for healthy eating which naturally leads you to healthy body composition WITH exercise. Reading this book gives you good knowledge of healthy eating, but you should update your knowledge reading newer non-fad diet books. I also read the book, "Skinny Bitch: Ultimate Everyday Cookbook", written by one of the authors. The book not only shows great recipes, but also explains why we should choose organic over conventional and what to look for in ingredient labels.

It would have been nice if I had find this book before I became a vegan. " I may have lost a lot of weight the first year" if I have had this book. That was the hardest thing I have every done without help. I recommend reading this book "before" you get started and it will help you after as well. This book really helped me a lot!!!! I take this with me everywhere I go to help me with my shopping. I must say to the women who wrote this book. That was ingenious!!!! and Thank You! Lewis Tewanima once ran 120 miles round-trip just to watch the trains go by. Life in his Hopi village was simple and peaceful, until he was forced to leave it and attend government boarding schools, first in New Mexico and then in Pennsylvania. Made to abandon his family and culture, Lewis vowed not to abandon his running. At Carlisle Indian School, he convinced Coach Warner that he could run. Eventually Tewanima won the Olympic silver medal record for the 10,000-meter race in 1912, but he found peace again in his Hopi mesa village, where he remained for almost 60 years. Fields’ portraiture of Tewanima’s facial features seems rather wooden, yet closely resembles photographs of him following the 1912 Olympics. Her landscape paintings of mesas, meanwhile, are beautiful. Children may need assistance in understanding Bureau of Indian Affairs schools and the prejudice that native peoples faced in the twentieth century. One day, Tewanima was forcefully taken from his village on Second Mesa, Arizona, and sent to a boarding school in Pennsylvania, where he was forced to give up his Hopi culture and learn American ways. While there, however, Tewanima was encouraged to run, and he eventually won many marathons and competed in the Olympics twice.This age-appropriate biography teaches children about the prejudice and hardships that Tewanima and other American Indians endured as well as the hope and strength of character that kept Tewanima strong. The government tried to rid him of his language and traditions, but Tewanima always ran for his tribe, keeping his heritage alive in his heart. Accurate and informative illustrations bring to life the peaceful beauty of the Southwest and the wider world that threatened to change it. Tewanima lived long ago, but his life still has much to teach us. Parents and children will see the true effects of the racism of the age in the story of one incredible athlete.Sharon K.
