An intense study of the art of acting. It is as dense as a handbook for assembling furniture. However, it does offer the insight of the art of acting, pulling away from amateur theatrics to time tested means of engaging both the actor and the audience. For those either seeking to test their resolute to taking up this craft, or to those seeking to further understand their craft, this is a heady guide.
I've read books about the Meisner method by Larry Silverberg, and thought that they had a lot to offer. But this book is just so complete. I have learned so much from it. It has inspired me to work harder and more diligently to be the best actor that I can be. The way that it is written really helps to keep you hooked to it. It is not a simple manual. It is written as a narrative from the point of view of a student taking classes from a Stanislavski-like teacher. You can see the realizations that this student is having, and he speaks for you, the student, by asking questions in class that you would ask for further clarifications. I am a little bit further than halfway through, and reading this book is a definite work in progress type of thing. And I am looking forward to drinking up the knowledge in the sequel to this book: An Actors Work on a Role. I believe that if you are going to read Stanislavski, you should read this translation. It is agreed among scholars, from what I have read, that Jean Benedetti's translation captures the intentions and the essence of what Stanislavksi was trying to teach.
Konstantin Stanislavski created the foundation of contemporary acting. Anyone serious about the craft of acting should read his work. And this update/translation feels absolutely crystal clear while remaining true to his intent. Five stars.

This is an extraordinarily well-done translation of an actor-training mainstay. There is no studying theatre in the western world without studying this book.
For easily fifty years, actors and theater people have been lumbered with the Hapgood translations of Stanislavski's work. Hapgood was not a theater practitioner. She was a Russian scholar and did not know acting. She not only made up vocabulary words that we've been stuck with for five decades, she made huge arbitrary cuts in the original Russian. Benedetti is clearly a man of the theater and it is a relief to have clarity on numerous issues that have perplexed and confused actors and directors for decades. Benedetti has several books on Stanislavski, so this is an area of his expertise. He comes to the table with a lifetime of exploration. I take issue with his decision to replace "soul" in the original Russian with "mind," but it's a minor quibble considering the wealth of knowledge at long last available.
Got this for my son's 14th birthday. It looks large and "academic" but is a very accessible, fun, translation. He loves it!
This was a required textbook for my freshman-level acting course, and with a bit of close-reading paired with classroom work, it's value really shows. This book, while the language can be a bit obfuscating, is a good companion tool to help young actors understand the mechanics of the skills taught in low-level collegiate acting courses.
