In this important new book, Bob Jessop offers a radical new interpretation of capitalist states and their likely future development. He focuses on the changing forms, functions, scales and effectiveness of economic and social policy that have emerged since the 1950s in advanced western capitalist states. The postwar Keynesian welfare national state that developed in most advanced capitalist societies has long been regarded as being in crisis. Mounting tensions have been generated by technological change, globalization, and economic and political crises, and new social and political movements have also had a destabilizing impact. Jessop examines these factors in relation to the rise, consolidation and crisis of Atlantic Fordism and asks whether a new type of capitalist state that is currently emerging offers a solution. He notes that there are several difficulties still to be overcome before the new type of state is consolidated; in particular, he is critical of its neoliberal form and considers its main alternatives. This book will have broad cross-disciplinary appeal. It will be read by sociologists, political scientists, institutional economists, geographers and students of social policy.

I had this book assigned for a class taught by Joseph Lough at UC Berkeley. Even for the standards of UC Berkeley, of upperclassman courses, and even of Prof Lough's love of dense books, this one wins the prize. Painful, reread-the-paragraph-three-times reading. The content and the models were really interesting. Awesome theorizing and relevant--I found the book gave theory to the more grounded material in a course I took by Robert Reich that same semester.Anyway, the discussions and lectures in Lough's class that came out of this book were fantastic. But the book itself is nearly unreadable. It's one step more comprehensible than say, Judith Butler. I never got to finish it, even though the concepts are interesting enough to make me want to try.Bob Jessop if you ever read this, I would be happy to take a month out of my life and sit with you to rewrite this in a comprehensible way. When students with top reading comprehension scores from top universities can't read your work but wish to, it's worth it :p
Contrary to the assertions of previous reviewer, it is my opinion that Jessop is one of the most eminently ludic, rigorous and comprehensible state theorists at work today. His work is clearly structured and articulated, so don't allow claims to the contrary frighten you off!The Future of the Capitalist State provides a highly illuminating account of capitalist type states as they have evolved into the present era. I'd personally recommend Jessop to anyone.Do yourself a favour and dig in!
