This was a present for my mother. She says it is a great book, full of information! She was reading it every time I saw her and took it on our trip too! Big bonus points for me in the gift giving department! I'm the good daughter now!
I grew up in Jacksonville, was in the last graduating class from Landon High School, and moved away in 1967 when I joined the service. We still have family in the area and visit the area frequently. I can remember, with great fondness, everything in this wonderful book. I am surprised that Dorthy didn't mention the Normandy Drive-In. They had twin screens and a train that ran completely around the property. It was almost like going to an amusement park. It was worth the drive from Southside to the other side of town.I was a bellhop at a small motor lodge two doors down from the Howard Johnsons on Phillips Highway and remember going there for ice cream during the long summer evenings when I got a break. The Krystal Burger across from Bishop Kenny and the A&W further out Beach Blvd were favorite hang outs as was Bono's and the Uncle Joe's diner on Atlantic where you could get the best foot long hotdog in town smothered in cole slaw.Wow, I feel like my classmates and I could probably double the volume of this wonderful book. As some of the emails in Ms. Fletcher's book point out, these were wonderful times, but we did experience a lot of tension with the Cold War threat right in our back yard. For all of the fantastic times we spent at the San Marco, Town & Country, Florida or one of the many other theaters watching those Saturday matinees, we also spent a lot of time doing the duck and cover drills hiding under out magical school desks that were immune to atomic attack.Thank you Ms. Fletcher for compiling your articles and putting them out so they are available for all of us Jacksonville expats.
Although I'm not as young as the author, ( I'm 48 years old ) this book still takes me down memory lane.I loved seeing parts of Jacksonville as it used to look. Also like hearing from other readers about they're perspective on a lot of the same things that the author talks about. Like I didn't know that this one building across from Bishop Kinny High School used to be a Kristal Burger hang out. And I for got all about the Howard Johnson's. Great Book!
Dorothy Fletcher has done her homework and presents a glimpse of Jacksonville not chronicled before. This large collection of vignettes compiled from her "By the Wayside" column in the Florida Times-Union includes plenty of historic photos along with responses and correspondence from her readers and friends that her writing naturally invokes. Her latest book confirms her as the local historian extraordinaire of growing up in Florida's biggest little small town before big shopping malls and sprawling expressways took over the city. Ms. Fletcher's easy going style matches the times and tales told in the book and will delight you with memories of growing up in the simpler and less complicated times many will remember fondly.
Love this book!
No matter where your hometown is, this great collection of stories and responses makes you nostalgic for home. As I did grow up in Jacksonville and share many of the same memories as the author, a lot of the story "hit home" for me, but many of the experiences could have been shared by people anywhere in those times. And how interesting that the stories were originally items in a newspaper columns, and the book includes responses by local and not-so-local people via email, letters, pictures, and more. A great view into the 50s, 60s, and 70s of "hometown America" as represented by Jacksonville.
This book brought back beautiful memories of Jacksonville!!!If you haven't read it, please do! You will love it as I did!Thanks Dorothy...very, very well written!!!
