This analysis of how Augustine formed catechism is not only good information about methodology for RCIA instruction, it's inspiring. I came away with a greater appreciation of Augustine and his preaching ability as well as how much of himself and his convictions he brought to the formation process.
Required book for seminary. Was dreading reading it and approached it as a pending dull read. However, I was surprised to find it very interesting. Seeing how Augustine used cathechesis was an attention grabber for me. I found myself enjoying it page after page. Now, please understand it is not an easy sit down and be entertained type of read for the average person. But it was enjoyable.
Loved learning about Augustine and his teaching! Harmless writes a well thought out book that keeps you reading! I had to read this for a class in seminary and the professor told us to "skim" major parts of the assigned reading but I read it all !
The author gives a great window into Augustine's time, and the way it was done then.
This is a remarkable work of scholarship and particularly so in service to the Church, which was Augstine's only interest. I do not use the worn-out phrase, "must read" very often if ever, but if any book can be declared to be such, Harmless' work certainly is an absolute MUST to be read.
