About the Author
Dr. William A. Albrecht, professor of soils at the University of Missouri College of Agriculture, was first a student of nature, and his greatest credential was that Nature accepted his findings, worked with them, and delivered much of American agriculture from the bondage of ignorance. Dr. Albrecht traveled widely and studied soils worldwide. "You have to have a vision," Dr. Albrecht used to say. "Unless you do, nature will never reveal herself." And such a vision he had. Prof. Albrecht was quite ahead of his time by insisting that the soil that food plants grow on is vital to the health of not only those plants, but of the animals and humans who eat those plants and even the health of humans who eat animals who eat plants grown on that soil. A mineral- rich soil produces healthy crops and those health benefits are passed on. The "modern" fertilizers developed around the turn of the 20th century did not replenish all the minerals removed from the soil by the plants as they grew, merely the few minerals that contributed toward faster growth. By following Prof. Albrecht's guidelines now, we can go a long way toward repairing the exhausted soil that our agriculture relies on even as we deplete it, and improve the health of ourselves and our domestic livestock as well.
Albrecht was exploring why animals in some areas did well while others did poorly. What he found is something that the USDA and land grant colleges that derive much of their funding from corporate agriculture has been trying to bury for years. Albrecht proved that poorly mineralized soils were the root of many diseases in animals, including we have to presume, humans. Soil testing and providing a wide array of nutrients, not just NPK, is a standard practice with most small scale organic growers today. This is the food people drive over an hour to get, pay high prices for, and shop in inconvenient outdoor locations. The concept of feeding the soil that feeds the plants, as opposed to feeding plants a few of the nutrients they need directly in the form of mineral salts, is all based on Albrecht's work.
